Game Overview

Once upon a time, in the waning days of the 32-bit era, Sega's Saturn console was graced with an original game named Dragon Force, which put you in command of vast sprite armies as you battled for control of a continent. Despite the game's cult popularity, it seemed that the closest thing audiences would ever see to that style of game would be the historical offerings from Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms titles. However, we're pleased to say that good things come to those who wait--as evidenced by Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders.

The Bottom Line

Sequel to the Blizzard-style real-time strategy game, released for PC in 2001. The sequel, set 50 years after the peaceful ending of the first game, deals with a reformed Dark Legion that has just wiped out a human town that sits on the border of Orc and Dark Elf territory. The nearby human armies converge near the site of the demolished town to wage war against those responsible. The game features 200 unique fantasy characters made up of 300 polygons each (10,000 polys for heroes). Players can upgrade and customize troops with even more gear and weapons have to brave averse weather that affect battle tactics

While the action portions aren't as good as they could be and are little more than mindless hack and slash, the RTS elements are a lot more fleshed out and add a lot of depth to the game.

A good game, a fun game, but also a frustrating game. The RTS implementation isn't as good as it could be, with a pesky camera and average control. It's the combat that really shines and the sheer magnitude of some battles.
