Game Overview

Kirby arrives on the Nintendo GameCube at warp speed in his first-ever racing game! The creators of Super Smash Bros. Melee bring you Kirby Air Ride, a racing game like no other. By applying the simple controls that define all Kirby games, Kirby Air Ride brings the racing genre to gamers of all abilities, so anyone can just pick up and play. Single-button gameplay controls all the action -- brake and slide around corners with a press of the A Button or hold and charge up as you slide, then release for break-neck acceleration. Of course, Kirby wouldnt be Kirby if he werent copying enemy abilities and using them to his advantage, so prepare for some wild and wacky transformations! Kirby Air Ride features a variety of gameplay modes. Slide and glide in 3D racing, ready yourself for a race for power-ups as you enter multiplayer tournament battles, or tackle tracks from a birds eye perspective in a unique overhead-view mode.

The Bottom Line

Kirby arrives on Nintendo GameCube at warp speed in his first-ever racing game. Based on the same principles as games like Super Smash Brothers and past Kirby titles, Kirby Air Ride offers an entirely new approach to the racing genre. The ultra-easy controls give Kirby Air Ride instant playability no matter how skilled the players may be. You control Kirby with the analog stick and the A button -- that's it. The stick steers the character left and right (he accelerates perpetually) and the A button when pressed slows him down and when released delivers a temporary speed boost. The idea is to hold the button down around corners, drift them, and then shoot out with a burst of speed. The game features a four-player split-screen mode and LAN support for link-up play.

The overly simplified gameplay really holds it back, and overall, it's a game that really can't be recommended to anyone, young or old.

So simple and so devoid of depth or challenge that most will dislike it -- will, in fact, be utterly bored with it.
