Kirkland

The Joshua Sears Building is a historic building in Kirkland, Washington located at the northwest corner of Market Street and Seventh Avenue,... Kirkland's historic commercial core. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1891 by Boston philanthropist and capitalist, Joshua Sears, who was heavily invested in Peter Kirk's Great Western Iron & Steel Works and who planned to open a bank in town. As a result of the Panic of 1893, the steel mill and the bank never opened but the Sears building survives today as a reminder of what might have been in Kirkland. On August 3, 1982, it was added the National Register of Historic Places. A single detached structure, the building is an irregular polygon in plan, measuring 10' x 81' x 52' x 42' x 61'. It is two full stories with a full basement. The main entrance is on the southeast corner with a second major entrance centered on the east facade. The building is Italianate in style and is constructed of red brick in the stretcher bond pattern. The foundation is also brick. The roof is flat and covered with tar and gravel. There is a continuous pressed metal cornice around the east and south roof lines.

The Arthur Foss, built in 1889, is one of the oldest wooden-hulled tugboats afloat in the United States. In 1898, in response to the Alaskan gold... rush, she transported barges full of gold seeking miners and supplies up the Inside Passage. There are no other Alaskan Gold Rush vessels still operating today. She was cast by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie studio to play in its 1933 production Tugboat Annie. In World War II, Arthur Foss journeyed south to join the war effort. Before the Battle of Wake Island began in late 1941, she was the last vessel to get away. After the war, she served the economy of the Northwest by working in the timber industry. The Arthur Foss has a six-cylinder, 700 horsepower diesel engine. Her top speed is 13 knots . The vessel is 111.6 feet long with a beam of 23.9 feet and a draft of 15 feet . When last operated the vessel was owned by Foss Launch and Tug Company who donated her to Northwest Seaport in 1970. Northwest Seaport renovated her in 2004. The vessel was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989 and is a city landmark as well.

Jason Scott Mesnick is the runner-up on Season 4 of The Bachelorette and the Bachelor of the 13th season of the reality dating show The Bachelor.... Mesnick is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, but moved to Washington at the age of eight. He has two brothers, Sean and Larry, his parents divorced when he was a teen and had re-married on their separate ways. Mesnick attended Lake Washington High School and got his part-time job at Safeway. Following his graduation from high school in 1994, he attended University of Washington where he joined Theta Chi Fraternity, he received his BA in psychology when he graduated in 1998. In 2003, Mesnick married Hilary Buckholz and have a son, Ty. Their marriage did not last, but they were divorced in 2006 and later finalized in 2007. However, Mesnick raised Ty as a single father. Mesnick now resides in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland. Mesnick is a business development manager for the travel company Down Under Answers, and is a "big brother" for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

Layne Thomas Staley was an American musician who served as the lead singer and co-lyricist of the rock band Alice in Chains, which was formed in... Seattle, Washington in 1987 by Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The band became known for his distinct vocal style, as well as the harmonized vocals between him and Cantrell. Staley was also a member of the supergroups Mad Season and Class of '99. He struggled throughout his career with severe drug addiction, culminating with his death in April 2002. Layne Staley was born to Phil Staley and Nancy Staley in Kirkland, Washington. He was seven years old when his parents divorced, after which he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Jim Elmer. He was raised Catholic. He took his stepfather's name while enrolled in Meadowdale High School and was known for some time as Layne Elmer. In early 2002, shortly before his death, he would describe the experience of witnessing his parents' divorce: "My world became a nightmare, there were just shadows around me.
