Korea is an East Asian geographic region that is currently divided into two separate sovereign states — North Korea and South Korea. Located... on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Russia to the northeast, and is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan , and separated from the Republic of China to the south by the East China Sea. Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggest the origins of the Korean people might have been Altaic language-speaking people from south-central Siberia, who populated ancient Korea in successive waves from the Neolithic age to the Bronze Age. The adoption of the Chinese writing system in the 2nd century BC, and Buddhism in the 4th century AD, had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Korea was united by Emperor Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty in 936. Goryeo was a highly cultural state and created the Jikji in the 14th century, using the world's first movable metal type printing press.

The 1950s or The Fifties was the decade that began on January 1, 1950 and ended on December 31, 1959. The decade was the sixth decade of the 20th... century. By its end, the world had largely recovered from World War II and the Cold War developed from its modest beginning in the late 1940s to a hot competition between the United States and the Soviet Union by the beginning of the 1960s. Clashes between communism and capitalism dominated the decade, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. The conflicts included the Korean War in the beginnings of the decade and the beginning of the Space Race with the launch of Sputnik I. Along with increased testing of nuclear weapons , this created a politically conservative climate. In the United States, the Red Scare caused public Congressional hearings by both houses in Congress and anti-communism was the prevailing sentiment in the United States throughout the decade .

The First Battle of Maryang San , also known as the Defensive Battle of Maliangshan , was fought during the Korean War between United Nations ... forces—primarily Australian and British—and the Chinese communist People's Volunteer Army. The fighting occurred during a limited UN offensive by US I Corps, codenamed Operation Commando. This offensive ultimately pushed the Chinese back from the Imjin River to the Jamestown Line and destroyed elements of four Chinese field armies following heavy fighting. The much smaller battle at Maryang San took place over a five-day period, and saw the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment dislodge a numerically superior Chinese force from the tactically important Kowang-San and Maryang San features, in conjunction with other units of the 1st Commonwealth Division. Using tactics first developed against the Japanese in New Guinea during the Second World War, the Australians gained the advantage of the high ground and assaulted the Chinese positions from unexpected directions.

The Battle of Uijeongbu was a battle fought in Uijeongbu during the Korean War. It began on the June 25, 1950, when the North Koreans invaded South... Korea. The North Koreans' objective was divided into three lines. The first one was to pass Gaeseong, Munsan and Seoul. The second was to pass Uijeongbu and Seoul and the third was to pass Chuncheon. Of these three lines, the Chuncheon line's advance ground to a stop, but the Gaeseong-Munsan line, after a 1 day delay, broke through and the Uijeongbu line broke through easily. The North Koreans had two divisions reinforced with one tank brigade , and the South Koreans had one division . The North Koreans, armed with Russian T-34 tanks, couldn't be stopped even by the added men of 2nd South Korean division with the Water security brigade. The 7th Division was pushed down from the front line and established a defence line linking Pocheon and Dongducheon. Even this couldn't hold and the division was pushed backed to Uijeongbu. Chae Byeong-deok, the Chief of Staff of the South Korean Defence Corps, added 2nd Division and other men but the next day the North Koreans pushed into Uijeongbu.

The Battle of White Horse , was another in a series of bloody battles for dominant hilltop positions during the Korean War. Baengma-goji was a... 395-metre hill in the Iron Triangle, formed by Pyonggang at its peak and Kumhwa and Chorwon at its base, was a strategic transportation route in the central region of the Korean peninsula. White Horse was the crest of a forested hill mass that extended in a northwestsoutheast direction for about two miles , part of the area controlled by the U.S. IX Corps, and considered an important outpost hill with a good command over the Yokkok-chon Valley, dominating the western approaches to Chorwon. Loss of the hill would force the IX Corps to withdraw to the high ground south of the Yokkok-chon in the Chorwon area, would deny the IX Corps use of the Chorwon road net, and would open up the entire Chorwon area to enemy attack and penetration. During ten days of battle, the hill would change hands 24 times after repeated attacks and counterattacks for its possession.

The Battle of Bloody Ridge was a ground combat battle that took place during the Korean War from August 18 to September 5, 1951. Located in hills... north of the 38th parallel north in the central Korean mountain range, the battle was fought between the communist North Korean forces of the Korean People's Army and United Nations forces consisting of Republic of Korea Army units and the U.S. 2nd Infantry Division. By the summer of 1951, the Korean War had reached a stalemate as peace negotiations began at Kaesong. The opposing armies faced each other across a line which ran from east to west, through the middle of the Korean peninsula, a few miles north of the 38th parallel. UN and communist forces jockeyed for position along this line, clashing in several relatively small but intense and bloody battles. Bloody Ridge began as an attempt by U.N. forces to seize a series of hills forming a ridge which they believed were being used as observation posts to call in artillery fire on a UN supply road. The 36th ROK Regiment made the initial attack.
