Where the Air is Clear is a 1958 novel by Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes. It was his first novel and has become a classic. It tells the story of Mexican society during the first half of 20th century, in particular that of Mexico City. The novel provides an insight into the different Mexican cultures, the Spanish, the indigenous and the mestizo which cohabit the same geographical area but function in separate worlds. On November 2008, the Royal Spanish Academy together with Spanish academies from all the world, released a special edition of the book to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
