L'Amore in Città

Federico Fellini was an Italian film director and scriptwriter. Known for a distinct style that blends fantasy and baroque images, he is considered one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century, and is widely revered. He won five Academy Awards and was nominated for 12 in a career... that spanned over forty years. Fellini was born on January 20, 1920 to middle-class parents in Rimini, then a small town on the Adriatic Sea. His father, Urbano Fellini , born to a family of Romagnol peasants and small landholders from Gambettola, moved to Rome in 1915 as a baker apprenticed to the Pantanella pasta factory. His mother, Ida Barbiani , came from a bourgeois Catholic family of Roman merchants. Despite her family’s vehement disapproval, she eloped with Urbano in 1917 to live at his parents' home in Gambettola. A civil marriage followed in 1918 with the religious ceremony held at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome a year later. The couple settled in Rimini where Urbano became a traveling salesman and wholesale vendor.

Michelangelo Antonioni, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI was an Italian modernist film director, screenwriter, editor and short story writer. Antonioni was born into a prosperous family of landowners in Ferrara, Emilia Romagna, in northern Italy. He was the son of Elisabetta and Ismaele Antonioni.... The director explained to Italian film critic Aldo Tassone: While still a child, Antonioni was fond of drawing and music. A precocious violinist, he gave his first concert at the age of nine. Although he abandoned the violin with the discovery of cinema in his teens, drawing would remain a lifelong passion. "I have never drawn, even as a child, either puppets or silhouettes but rather facades of houses and gates. One of my favourite games consisted of organising towns. Ignorant in architecture, I constructed buildings and streets crammed with little figures. I invented stories for them. These childhood happenings - I was eleven years old - were like little films." Upon graduation from the University of Bologna with a degree in economics, he started writing for the local Ferrara newspaper Il Corriere Padano in 1935 as a film journalist.

Alberto Lattuada was an Italian film director. Lattuada was born in Milan, the son of composer Felice Lattuada. He was initially interested in literature, becoming, while still a student, a member of the editorial staff of the antifascist fortnightly "Camminare" and part of the artists' group... Corrente di Vita . According to an interview of his son , Lattuada's father made him complete his studies as an architect even though he recognized his desire to make movies. In 1940 he started his cinema career as a screenwriter and assistant director on Mario Soldati's Piccolo mondo antico . In 1943 he directed his first movie, Giacomo l'idealista. Luci del Varietà , co-directed with Federico Fellini, was the latter's first directorial endeavour. His 1962 film La steppa was entered into the 12th Berlin International Film Festival. In 1970, he was a member of the jury at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival. In 1979, New Line Cinema released his erotic film Stay As You Are theatrically in the United States.

Carlo Lizzani is an Italian film director, screenwriter and critic. Born in Rome, after World War II Lizzani worked on such notable films of the late 1940s as Roberto Rossellini's Germany Year Zero, Alberto Lattuada's The Mill on the Po and Giuseppe De Santis' Bitter Rice . After helming... documentaries, he debuted as a feature director with the admired World War II drama Achtung! Banditi! . He films an episode of L'Amore in Città. Respected for his awarded drama Chronicle of Poor Lovers , he has proven a solid director of genre films, notably crime films such as The Violent Four and Crazy Joe or erotic comedy Roma Bene . He worked frequently for Italian television in the 1980s and was a member of the jury at the Berlin Film Festival in 1994. His film Celluloide talks about the making of Rome, Open City.

Dino Risi was an Italian film director. With Mario Monicelli, Luigi Comencini, Nanni Loy and Ettore Scola, he was one of the masters of Commedia all'italiana. He was born in Milan. At the age of 12 Risi became an orphan and was looked after by relatives and friends of his family. He studied... medicine and later became a psychiatrist. Risi started his career in cinema as an assistant director to cinema figures such as Mario Soldati and Alberto Lattuada. Later he began directing his own films and was credited with giving early opportunities to future acting stars such as Sophia Loren and Vittorio Gassman. His biggest hits were Poor, But Handsome , followed by two sequels, which he also directed; A Difficult Life ; The Easy Life ; Opiate '67 or, in a cut version, 15 From Rome ; and Scent Of A Woman , which was remade by Martin Brest starring Al Pacino in 1992. In 2002, he was awarded the Golden Lion – Honorary Award at the Venice Film Festival for his life-time work.
