Franz Welser-Möst is an Austrian conductor who is currently the music director for the Cleveland Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera. Franz... Leopold Maria Möst was born in Linz, Austria, and later studied under the composer Balduin Sulzer. As a youth in Linz, he studied the violin and had developed an interest in conducting. After suffering injuries in a car crash that led to nerve damage, he stopped his violin studies and shifted full-time to conducting studies. In 1985, Möst assumed the stage name Welser-Möst on suggestion of his mentor, Baron Andreas von Bennigsen of Liechtenstein, thus paying homage to the city of Wels where he grew up. In 1986, he was adopted by von Bennigsen. In 1992, Welser-Möst married von Bennigsen's former wife, Angelika. His first major debuts were at the Salzburg Festival in 1985, followed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986 and the Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur in 1988.

Raina A. Mercedes Echerer is an Austrian film and stage actress, host of TV and radio shows, and politician. From 1999 to 2004 she was Member of the... European Parliament for the Austrian Green Party, part of the European Greens, although she was not member of the party. During her term she was member of the Committee on Culture, Youth, Education, the Media and Sport, and substitute for the Committee on Budgets and the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Internal Market. In 1994 she also hosted the Prix Ars Electronica. As of 2006, she is playing Elmire in Molière's Tartuffe at the Lower Austrian state theater in St. Pölten.

Alexandr Hackenschmied was a leading photographer and filmmaker in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 and... became involved in American avant-garde cinema. His film, Meshes of the Afternoon, which he made with filmmaker Maya Deren -- to whom he was married from 1942 to 1947—has become an icon of avant-garde cinema in the U.S. He changed his name to Alexander Hammid when he became a citizen of the United States in 1942. He is best known for his work in documentary film, both as a director, cameraman, and editor. According to Jaroslav Andel's biography of Hackenschmied, in 1930, Hackenschmied created his first film Bezúčelná procházka which inaugurated the movement of avant-garde film in Czechoslovakia. The same year he also organized the Exhibition of New Czech Photography in the Aventinska Mansarda—a showcase for artists of the Aventinum publishing house in Prague -- and the first show of European avant-garde film in the Kotva Cinema, also in Prague.

Paul Haslinger is an Austrian-born composer and musician currently based in Los Angeles, California. Haslinger was born in Linz, Upper Austria,... Austria. After studying classical music in Vienna, Austria, Haslinger joined the German electronic music group, Tangerine Dream in 1986. During the following 5 years he recorded a total of 15 albums with the group, participated in 4 international tours and collaborated on a number of soundtracks, including Miracle Mile, Near Dark, and Shy People. The soundtrack album for the Miramar film release Canyon Dreams by director Jan Nickman, earned Haslinger his first Grammy nomination in 1991. Haslinger decided to leave the group and move to Los Angeles in 1992. The Blue Room project, in collaboration with Peter Baumann, was recorded but never released on Private Music. Subsequently, Haslinger set up his own studio operation in West Hollywood, California, named The Assembly Room, and released 3 solo albums, Future Primitive , World Without Rules , and Score .

Gilla is an Austrian singer from the late 1970s disco era. Gilla was discovered by German producer Frank Farian who got her signed to Hansa Records... in 1974. After an unsuccessful German cover version "Mir ist kein Weg zu weit" of Marcella Bella's Italian hit single "Nessuno mai", Farian had her record a German disco version of Labelle's "Lady Marmalade". Despite being a modest hit , it caused some attention of being the first German record to feature such explicit lyrics as "Willst du mit mir schlafen gehn?" . It was followed later in the year with "Tu es" which became Gilla's biggest hit, peaking at #10 in the German charts and giving Farian a commercial breakthrough as a producer. Gilla's debut LP, featuring a mix of disco, pop and schlager tracks, was released shortly after. In the summer of 1976, Gilla followed with "Ich brenne" , once again also recorded in English as "Help Help". It was a Dutch hit single but fared less well in Germany. Farian remixed the track with his own vocals for inclusion on Boney M.
