The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, a convention center located in Lubbock, Texas, was built in 1977 and dedicated to the memory of local residents... who died in a 1970 tornado that struck the site of the center. In front of the center is a statue honoring Buddy Holly, who had died in 1959.

The Carlock Building, 1001 – 1013 13th Street, Lubbock, Texas, is an office building designed in the Art Deco style by J. B. Davies &... Company of Fort Worth, Texas. It was constructed in 1930 as a cotton exchange for J. D. Doughty and J. B. Kerby. The building reflected the importance of cotton in the region and the growth of peripheral industries. Cotton merchandising firms headed by Charles Paul Carlock and Watson have continuously occupied this building since its construction. The Carlock Building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building currently houses law offices of Glasheen, Valles, Inderman, & Dehoyos, L.L.P.

Tubbs/Carlisle House or Tubbs House or Tubbs/Revier House is an historic house in Lubbock, Texas. It is a memorial to the perspicacity, work ethic... and dedication of the Pioneers who tamed, settled and developed the last frontier known as 'The Great American Desert', referred to generally as The Great Plains of the United States and Canada. Isham and Texana Tubbs began to think of caring for Texana's sister Lizzie Spikes Carlisle who had cared for the sisters' mother Lucinda Pelts Carter Spikes until her death at age 85 in 1902. This called for the sale of developed homesteads in Wolfforth, Texas and a move 10 miles across the prairie onto 1 1/2 sections adjoining W. A.'Gus' Carlisle's homesite. The timber for use in construction of this house was cut from trees selected by Isham Tubbs while on a return trip to their prior home in Kaufman County, Texas some 500 miles to the East. After milling, the lumber was railed to Colorado City, Childress and Amarillo, Texas, as the Railway neared Lubbock, and hauled to the site from those railheads by horse and wagon. There it cured onsite until construction was begun in 1907 and finished in 1908.

The Cactus Theater is a theater located in Lubbock, Texas, US. It hosts live music productions, musicals, and theatrical plays. In 1938, Lubbock... businessmen Joe H. Bryant, M. A. Sanders, and Glenn Woody, built Lubbock’s first suburban neighborhood movie theater. The Art Deco style theater was designed by architect Robert Maxey. The theater was built as a "second-run" movie theater and boasted a seating capacity of 720. It also had "washed air" cooling and a marquee with over 750 feet of neon lighting. The Cactus remained opened for twenty years. However, by 1957, there were seventeen movie theaters in the city. The competition from the other traditional theaters and the popularity of six new drive-in theaters forced the older Cactus out of business. The Cactus closed on May 6, 1958. As part of the development of Lubbock's Depot District in 1993, Cactus Theater, Inc., along with a group of investors, bought the Cactus Theater and refurbished it into a live performance/movie theater. The refurbished theater retains its original balcony, slope, and stage. The seating was replaced with four hundred modern seats.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore is a country singer, songwriter, actor, recording artist and producer, currently living in Austin, Texas. Gilmore is a native of... the Texas Panhandle, having been born in Amarillo, Texas, and raised in Lubbock, Texas. His earliest musical influence was Hank Williams and the honky tonk brand of country music that his father played. In the 1950s, he was exposed to the emerging rock and roll of other Texans such as Roy Orbison and Lubbock native Buddy Holly, as well as to Johnny Cash. He was profoundly influenced in the 1960s by the likes of The Beatles and Bob Dylan and the folk music and blues revival in that decade. With Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, Gilmore founded The Flatlanders. The group has been performing on and off since 1972. The band's first recording project, from the early 1970s, was barely distributed. It has since been acknowledged, through Rounder's 1991 reissue , as a milestone of progressive, alternative country. The three friends continued to reunite for occasional Flatlanders performances, and in May 2002 released a long-awaited follow-up album, Now Again, on New West Records.

Natalie Louise Maines Pasdar is an American singer-songwriter who achieved success as the lead vocalist for the female alternative country band, the... Dixie Chicks. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Maines considers herself a rebel who "loved not thinking in the way I knew the majority of people thought." In 1995, after leaving Berklee College of Music, Maines was recruited by the Dixie Chicks to replace their lead singer, Laura Lynch. With Maines as lead vocalist, the band earned 10 Country Music Association Awards and 13 Grammy Awards for their work between 1998 and 2007. On the eve of the Iraq invasion, while in concert in London for the 2003 Top of the World Tour, Maines commented that the Dixie Chicks were "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." Negative public reaction in the United States to this comment resulted in boycotts by country music radio stations and death threats. In 2006, with Maines still acting as lead singer, the Dixie Chicks released Taking the Long Way. The album subsequently won five Grammy Awards .

Donald Rogers Maynard is a former American football player who played collegiately for Texas Western College and professionally with the National... Football League's New York Giants and the American Football League's New York Jets and the World Football League's Shreveport Steamer. After having been released by the Giants, and playing one season in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats , Maynard became the first player to sign with the New York Titans in 1960 . Although scorned by the New York press as an "NFL reject", in 1960, he teamed with Hall of Famer Art Powell to form the first professional wide receiver tandem to each gain over 1,000 yards on receptions in a season, with the pair achieving this milestone again in 1962. Over the next 13 years Maynard put up receiving numbers that would earn him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

Lloyd Maines is an American Grammy Award-winning country music record producer, musician and songwriter. He was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas... and is now based in Bulverde, Texas. Arguably best known as a pedal steel player, Maines is a multi-instrumentalist who has also performed and/or recorded playing dobro, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, lap steel guitar, banjo and bell tree. He toured and recorded as a member of the Joe Ely Band and has also played with Guy Clark, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Golden Bear, and other Texas musicians. Maines was a member of The Maines Brothers Band in the late 1970s and early 1980s and has contributed to alt-country releases, including Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne and Wilco's debut, A.M.. Maines began producing some of his own music, branching out beginning with other country artists, early on starting with Terry Allen's seminal 1979 album, Lubbock .

Helen Wagner was an American actress. Born in Lubbock, Texas, she is best known for her long-running role as Nancy Hughes McClosky on the soap opera... As the World Turns. Wagner also played the role of Trudy Bauer during the initial TV years of Guiding Light in the early 1950s. She also appeared on the early soap Valiant Lady, as well as on 1950s primetime programs including The World of Mr. Sweeney, Mister Peepers, Inner Sanctum, and the Philco-Goodyear Playhouse. Wagner died on May 1, 2010, at the age of 91. The cause of her death was cancer. Wagner played the soap opera's matriarch, Nancy Hughes, from its debut on April 2, 1956, until her death. She is acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records for having the longest run in a single role on television. In fact, Wagner spoke the show's very first line, "good morning, dear," and would go on to witness its many broadcast transformations. As The World Turns premiered as a 30-minute program and was the first soap opera, along with The Edge of Night, to do so. Up until that time, all soaps ran for only 15-minutes.

Conrad Vernon IV is an American director, writer, and voice actor, best known for his work on the DreamWorks animated film series Shrek as well as... other films such as Monsters vs. Aliens. Vernon, a native of Lubbock, Texas, studied at CalArts and worked as a storyboard artist on Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, 2 Stupid Dogs, Rocko's Modern Life, Nightmare Ned, Morto the Magician, and Shrek; additionally, he directed Shrek 2. He also worked in the same capacity on Antz. After Antz proved a success as the first animated feature film to be produced by DreamWorks Animation, Vernon signed on as a writer for Shrek, where he was responsible for the Gingerbread Man, and eventually voiced that character. He also appeared in Shrek 4-D and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. He voiced Mason the chimpanzee for the DreamWorks Animation films Madagascar and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and its television series . Additionally, he provided the voice for Insectosaurus and directed the 3D animated film, Monsters vs. Aliens. Vernon will also be the producer of the upcoming The Annoying Orange TV series.

Sean Stewart is a U.S.-Canadian science fiction and fantasy author. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Sean Stewart moved to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1968.... After stints in Houston, Texas, Vancouver, British Columbia, Irvine, California and Monterey, California, he now lives in Davis, California, with his wife and two daughters. He received an Honors degree in English from University of Alberta in 1987, following which he spent many years writing novels. He gradually moved from writing novels to interactive fiction, first as lead writer on the Web based Alternate Reality Game The Beast. He served as a consultant on several computer games, and was on the management team of the 4orty2wo Entertainment experiential marketing and entertainment company, where he was lead writer for Haunted Apiary aka ilovebees and Last Call Poker. His newest novel Cathy's Book seems to represent the melding of his two careers, as it crosses the alternate reality game format with a teen novel. In 2007, he and several 4orty2wo co-founders left that company to start Fourth Wall Studios.

Nickla Ann Roberts is an American semi-retired professional wrestler and valet, better known by her ring name, "The Perfect 10" Baby Doll. She is... best known for her appearances with World Class Championship Wrestling and Jim Crockett Promotions in the 1980s. Roberts was born in Lubbock, Texas to Nick Roberts and Lorraine Johnson. Both Nick Roberts and Johnson were professional wrestlers, and Johnson also promoted weekly events at the Fair Park Coliseum. During her childhood, Roberts sold programs at her father's events, in the process befriending future wrestlers Bruce and Keith Hart and Kerry and Kevin Von Erich. From an early age, Roberts aimed to become a professional wrestler. In the summer of 1984, while training to become an emergency medical technician , Roberts overheard her parents say that her childhood crush, World Class Championship Wrestling wrestler Gino Hernandez, was in need of a valet. Unbeknownst to her parents, Roberts contacted David Manning, the WCCW booker, and proposed that she could manage Hernandez.
