Macy's is a U.S. chain of mid-to-high range department stores. In addition to its flagship Herald Square location in New York City, the company operates over 800 stores in the United States as of January 30, 2010 . It also has eSpot ZoomShops kiosks in over 300 store locations selling consumer electronics. Famed equally for its niche in popular culture and the diversity of its merchandise, the chain competes with Belk, Bon-Ton, Dillard's, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. It has produced the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City since 1924, and sponsored... the City's annual Fourth of July fireworks display since 1976. Despite being advertised as the largest in the world, its flagship has been superseded by that of Shinsegae in Centum City, South Korea. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, its area of 509,810 square metres is almost twice that of Macy's. Macy's was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy, who between 1843 and 1855 opened four retail dry goods stores, including the original Macy's store in downtown Haverhill, Massachusetts, established in 1851 to serve the mill industry employees of the area.
