The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960 and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. The group's best-known lineup consisted of John Lennon , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr . Rooted in skiffle... and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. Their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania"; as their songwriting grew in sophistication, by the late 1960s they came to be perceived by many fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions. As a five-piece line-up of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison on guitar and vocals, with Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best , the band built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. Sutcliffe left the group in 1961, and Best was replaced by Starr the following year.

With John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, he gained worldwide fame as a member of the Beatles, and with Lennon formed one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. After leaving the Beatles, he began a solo career and later formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda Eastman, and singer-songwriter Denny Laine. According to the BBC, his Beatles song "Yesterday" has been covered by over 2,200 artists—more than any other song in history. Wings' 1977 single "Mull of Kintyre" became one of the best-selling singles in UK chart history. As a musician, songwriter, or co-writer, he is included on thirty-one number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2012 he has sold 15.5 million RIAA certified units in the United States as a solo artist.

Bernard Knowles was an English film director, producer, cinematographer and screenwriter. Born in Manchester, Knowles worked with Alfred Hitchcock on numerous occasions before the director emigrated to Hollywood. Knowles later graduated as a director and screenwriter, directing a number of high... profile films including the 1946 Gainsborough Melodrama The Magic Bow. He worked a great deal on Television shows, including Fabian of the Yard, Dial 999, Ivanhoe and The Adventures of Robin Hood. He died shortly before his 75th birthday in Taplow, Buckinghamshire in 1975.
