Mechanicsville is a census designated place in Hanover County, Virginia,  United States. The population was 34,648 during the 2000 census. The area was settled by English colonists starting in the 17th century. Rural Plains, also known as Shelton House, is a house built in the early decades of the eighteenth century. It is now owned and operated by the National Park Service as one of the sites of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. In "Old Mechanicsville" stands a stone windmill.
