Dr. Andrew H. Delbanco is Director of American Studies at Columbia University and has been Columbia's Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities since 1995. An autobiography is about a life of a subject, written by that subject or sometimes with a collaborator. The Early Middle Ages saw a decline in awareness of the classical culture in Europe.
