Grenfell Campus, formerly referred to as Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, is a Canadian liberal arts and science university located in Corner Brook,... Newfoundland and Labrador. It is the west coast campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland. There are approximately 1,300 students enrolled in degree programs for the arts, fine arts, science and nursing. Many students from around the province also attend the school for the first- and second-year course offerings before transferring to Memorial University's larger campus in St. John's. The college opened in 1975 as Memorial University of Newfoundland's West Coast Regional College with Dr. Arthur Sullivan as its principal. The facility was renamed in 1979 in honour of British medical missionary pioneer Wilfred Grenfell. The original building is now the Arts and Science Building. In 1988, the campus' second building opened - the Fine Arts Building. Grenfell Campus saw significant expansion in the 1990s and early 2000s with new student housing and academic buildings constructed. In 1995, the Library and Computing Building opened; and in 1997, the Student Centre annex was added to the Arts and Science Building.

The Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, popularly referred to as the Marine Institute or simply Marine, is a post-secondary... ocean and marine polytechnic located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is affiliated with Memorial University of Newfoundland. The Marine Institute is considered the most comprehensive institution of its kind in North America, with unique facilities such as a full ships bridge simulator and the worlds largest flume tank. It offers degrees, diplomas, certifications and industry training for the maritime sector. In 1964, Newfoundland Premier Smallwood opened the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics, at the former Parade St. campus of Memorial University College . The Fisheries College, as it was then known colloquially, was moved in 1984 to its current Ridge Road building and renamed to the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology. 1992 saw the name change again, as the institution became affiliated with Memorial University as The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Helge Marcus Ingstad was a Norwegian explorer. After mapping some Norse settlements, Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine, an archaeologist, in 1960... found remnants of a Viking settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows in the Province of Newfoundland in Canada. With that they were the first to prove conclusively that the Greenlandic Norsemen had found a way across the Atlantic Ocean to North America, roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus and John Cabot. He also thought that the mysterious disappearance of the Greenland Viking settlement in the 14/15th century could be explained by their emigration to North America. Helge Ingstad was born to Olav Ingstad and Olga Marie Qvam. His father was municipal engineer in Tromsø and held the title of factory supervisor. Helge grew up in Bergen, and after graduating cand. jur. in 1922 he took up a practice of lawyer in Levanger. Helge Ingstad was originally a lawyer by profession, but, ever an outdoorsman, he sold his successful law practice in Levanger and went to Canada's Northwest Territories as a trapper in 1926.
