Beastie Boys are an American hip hop group from New York City, formed in 1981. For most of the group's career, the line-up has consisted of three MCs... and musicians Michael "Mike D" Diamond , Adam "MCA" Yauch and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz . Originally formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band in 1981 by Michael Diamond , John Berry , Adam Yauch and Kate Schellenbach , the band appeared on the compilation cassette New York Thrash, before recording their first EP Polly Wog Stew, in 1982. After achieving moderate local success with the 1983 experimental hip hop 12" Cooky Puss, the group transitioned to hip hop in 1984 and released a string of successful 12" singles. The Beastie Boys toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album Licensed to Ill. The group sold 22 million albums in the United States and 40 million albums worldwide, making them, according to Billboard, "the biggest-selling rap group" since 1991.

Methods of Mayhem is an American nu metal band formed in 1999 by Tommy Lee, who had temporarily quit his position as Mötley Crüe's drummer.... Lee formed Methods of Mayhem on the eve of his divorce from Pamela Anderson. Their first self-titled album was released in late 1999 and went on to be certified platinum. The album featured appearances by Fred Durst, Crystal Method, U-God, Kid Rock, Snoop Dogg, Lil' Kim, George Clinton and Mix Master Mike. The band disbanded in September 2000. Tommy Lee announced that he is reforming Methods of Mayhem, and would start recording in March 2009. Rumors of new members such as drummer Will Hunt, guitarist J3, guitarist Phil X , and the return of touring bassist Marty O'brien circulated. While an official touring line-up still has yet to be confirmed, it is known that each of these members have contributed to the latest album. A live performance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show saw Morgan Rose playing drums, with DJ Aero on Turntables, J3 on guitar and vocals, and Tommy Lee on vocals and guitar. There was no bass player present.

Grand Royal was the Los Angeles, California based vanity record label set up in 1992 by the Beastie Boys in conjunction with Capitol Records after the group left Def Jam Recordings. Due to mounting debts, Grand Royal went out of business in 2001. Its assets were sold off via auction on Bid4Assets;... these assets did not include any rights to Beastie Boys music. The assets and back catalog were purchased by a group of fans who in turn started GR2 Records. Grand Royal was also the name of a magazine written and published by the group. It was most famous for its article "Mulling Over the Mullet" in issue two, which lampooned the mullet hairstyle .
