Robert Florey was a French-American director, screenwriter, film journalist and occasional actor. Born in Paris, and at first a film journalist, Florey moved to the United States in September 1921. As a director Florey's most productive decades were the 1930s and 1940s, working on relatively... low-budget programmers for Paramount and Warner Brothers. His reputation is balanced between his avant-garde expressionist style, most evident in his early career, and his work as a fast, reliable studio-system director called on to finished troubled projects, such as 1939's Hotel Imperial. He directed more than 50 movies. His most popular film is likely the first Marx Brothers feature The Cocoanuts of 1929, and his 1932 foray into Universal-style horror, Murders in the Rue Morgue is regarded by horror fans as highly reflective of German expressionism. In 2006, as his 1937 film Daughter of Shanghai was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, Florey was called "widely acclaimed as the best director working in major studio B-films".

A. Edward Sutherland aka Eddie Sutherland was a film director and actor. Born Albert Edward Sutherland in London, he was from a theatrical family. His father, Al Sutherland, was a theatre manager and producer and his mother, Julie Ring, was a vaudeville performer. He was a nephew of both Blanche... Ring and Thomas Meighan, who was married to another of his mother's sisters Frances Ring. Sutherland acted in 37 known films early in his career, beginning as a Keystone Cop in Tillie's Punctured Romance , which starred Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, and Marie Dressler. He was directed by Charles Chaplin in A Woman of Paris , two years before Sutherland began his directing career with the help of Chaplin. It is as a director that he is best known, and he directed over 50 movies between 1925 and 1956. His breakout film was Behind the Front which made stars of the two leads and established Sutherland as a comedic director.

Edgar Georg Ulmer was an Austrian-American film director. He is best remembered for the movies The Black Cat and Detour . These stylish and eccentric works have achieved cult status, whereas Ulmer's other films remain relatively unknown. Ulmer was born in Olomouc, in what is now the Czech... Republic. As a young man he lived in Vienna, where he worked as a stage actor and set designer while studying architecture and philosophy. He did set design for Max Reinhardt's theater, served his apprenticeship with F. W. Murnau, and worked with directors including Robert Siodmak, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann and cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan, inventor of the Schüfftan process. He also claimed to have worked on Der Golem , Metropolis , and M , but there is no evidence to support this. Ulmer came to Hollywood with Murnau in 1926 to assist with the art direction on Sunrise . In an interview with Peter Bogdanovich, he also recalled making two-reel westerns in Hollywood around this time.
