Vernon County Courthouse in Nevada, Missouri was built in 1908. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The current Vernon... County Courthouse was the third one to be built in Nevada; the first was a two story building one block west of the present day courthouse. In addition to the court, it was also used for church services. The first courthouse was burnt down at the beginning of the Civil War. On 2 May 1863, a group of men from nearby Cedar county stormed the building, only to be killed by Vernon County defenders. When the men did not return home for a few days, another group men who claimed to be Union soldiers rode in. They told people to gather their belongings from their homes in fifteen minutes before they burned the town, which they did.

It has both Midwestern and Southern cultural influences, reflecting its history as a border state.
