The Balboa Inn, established in 1929, is located on the Balboa Peninsula in the city of Newport Beach, California. In its day, the Inn was the number... one hostelry on the Orange County Coast. The Balboa Inn was, and still is, a favorite getaway spot for Hollywood stars. For example, Olympic athlete and Tarzan star Johnny Weissmueller stayed there. Legend has it that Weissmueller swam the distance between the Balboa Pier and Newport Pier on a regular basis. The Inn has been remodeled and modernized a number of times. However, its graceful Spanish architecture remains largely unchanged today. The most famous room at the Inn is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Suite with its nine foot high doors. Nearby historical buildings and sights and sites include the Balboa Pavilion , Balboa Pier , Balboa Fun Zone , and Balboa Island Ferry . Activities nearby include narrated harbor cruises, Catalina Island passenger ferry, sport fishing, restaurants, shops, stores, and the ocean beach. During large south ocean swells, the nearby world-famous Wedge provides dangerous and exciting surfing entertainment.

The Lovell Beach House is located on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. The building was completed in 1926 and is now recognized as... one of the most important works by architect Rudolf Schindler, second only to the Schindler House, built four years earlier for his family as a show house and studio. Both of these early houses by Schindler are considered landmarks of early modern architecture in America. The residence is on the ocean front, not far from the Wedge at Newport Harbor, in a tightly packed neighborhood of buildings. The house is sheltered from the street on the west side by raising the living quarters above the ground level. The open space below reveals the reinforced concrete frames that were formed in the shape of a figure 8. Two stairways pass through the openings in the frames leading to the kitchen and the main entry. The garage is on the north side of the ground floor and the garden is on the south side, between the house and the beach. The interior is arranged around a two-story living/dining room, with full height, curtain wall windows on the east and south side facing the ocean.

Kobe Bean Bryant is an American professional basketball player who plays shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball... Association . Bryant enjoyed a successful high school basketball career at Lower Merion High School, where he was recognized as the top high school basketball player in the country. He decided to declare his eligibility for the NBA Draft upon graduation, and was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. As a rookie, Bryant earned himself a reputation as a high-flyer and a fan favorite by winning the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest. Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 to 2002. A heated feud between the duo and a loss in the 2004 NBA Finals was followed by O'Neal's trade from the Lakers after the 2003–04 season. In 2003, Bryant was accused of sexual assault after having sex with a hotel employee in Colorado. In September 2004, prosecutors dropped the case after his accuser refused to testify, and Bryant had to rebuild his image while becoming the cornerstone of the Lakers franchise.

Kelly Ann McGillis is an American actress. Her films include Top Gun, The Accused, and Witness, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.... McGillis attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division, where she performed in William Congreve's Love for Love, directed by John Blatchley. She graduated in 1983 and began landing acting roles shortly thereafter. Her breakout role was that of an Amish mother in the film Witness with Harrison Ford, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe award. Her next high profile role was that of flight instructor, Charlie, in the 1986 fighter-pilot film Top Gun with Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. After 1988's The Accused, she appeared in Cat Chaser with Peter Weller, a film she despised and which discouraged her from pursuing an acting career. McGillis appeared in dozens of television and film roles throughout the 1990s before taking a break from acting for a few years. In 2004, she appeared in the stage play The Graduate as Mrs. Robinson, touring the United States. She began working in television again in 2006, then in 2007, she joined the cast of Showtime's The L Word for its fifth season.

Jürgen Klinsmann is a German football manager and former player who is currently the coach of the United States Men's National Team. As a... player, Klinsmann played for several prominent clubs in Europe and was part of the West German team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the German one that won the 1996 UEFA European Championship. One of West Germany's/Germany's premier strikers during the 1990s, Klinsmann scored in all six major international tournaments he participated, from Euro 1988 to 1998 World Cup. He managed the German national team to a third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup. On 12 July 2006, Klinsmann officially announced that he would step down as Germany's coach after two years in charge and be replaced by assistant coach Joachim Löw. He took over as coach of Bayern Munich in July 2008, when Ottmar Hitzfeld stepped down to take over as the head coach of the Swiss National Team. On 27 April 2009 he was released early, even though he had won five of the previous seven league games and was only three points behind league leader VfL Wolfsburg.

Joey Bishop was an American entertainer who was perhaps best known for being a member of the "Rat Pack" with Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Sammy... Davis, Jr., and Dean Martin. Bishop appeared on television as early as 1948 and eventually starred in his own weekly comedy series as well as hosting a talk show. Bishop, youngest of five children, was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of Anna and Jacob Gottlieb, Jewish Central European immigrants. His father was a bicycle repairman. Bishop was raised in South Philadelphia. In 1941, Bishop married Sylvia Ruzga, who died in 1999 from lung cancer. They had one son, Larry Bishop, a film director and actor. Drafted into the US Army in World War II, he rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Special Services serving at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. Bishop began his career as part of a standup comedy act with his elder brother, Maury. He guest-hosted on television's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson more times than anyone else, having also frequently appeared on Steve Allen's and Jack Paar's previous versions of The Tonight Show.

At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Beard won a bronze a medal in the 200 m breaststroke. Beard attended the University of Arizona where she won an individual NCAA Division I championship in 2001. In 2003, she became the world champion and American record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke.

He has won a total of thirty-six medals in major international competition, twenty-nine gold, six silver, and one bronze spanning the Olympics, the World, Pan American, and the Pan Pacific Championships. In his Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics, at the age of seventeen, Peirsol won a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke. Four years later, at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Peirsol won gold in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke and the 4×100-meter medley relay.

Theodore Martin "Ted" McGinley is an American actor. He is known for his role as Jefferson D'Arcy on the television series Married with Children and... as Charley Shanowski on the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith. He was also a regular on Happy Days and The Love Boat. Born in Newport Beach, California, McGinley attended University of Southern California on a water polo scholarship where he played for the U.S. Junior National team, and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. McGinley began his career in modeling. After a casting director spotted a picture of him in GQ, he was cast in comedy series Happy Days as Roger Phillips , a role he played from 1980-1984. During the run of Happy Days, he landed a role in the 1982 comedy Young Doctors in Love. After Happy Days ended in 1984, McGinley appeared in Revenge of the Nerds where he played Stanley Gable, the head of the jock-run Alpha Beta fraternity and the primary antagonist of the Lambda Lambda Lambda nerd fraternity; he reprised the role in the third and fourth movies in the "Nerds" franchise, both produced for television.

Rodney G. Rowland is an American actor. He is credited as Rod Rowland in more recent productions, given his predilection to being called Rod.... Rowland's most noted appearances to date were as 1st Lieutenant Cooper Hawkes in 1995's Space: Above and Beyond and P. Wiley in The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Born in Newport Beach, California, Rowland is the youngest of 4 children and the son of a minister. After brief time as a student on a watersport scholarship at Pepperdine University, Rowland went to Europe and worked as a model for Haute Couture labels like Gucci, Versace, and J.Crew. On the suggestion of Bruce Weber, he began taking acting classes and took on roles in film and theater. Rowland's first big break was in James Wong and Glen Morgan's science fiction war drama, Space: Above and Beyond in 1995. Despite auditions that were disastrous, Morgan and Wong brought Rowland on board to play the genetically engineered InVitro Cooper Hawkes. During the shoot for the episode "Who Monitors the Birds?", he became ill due to over work, succumbing to two bouts of exhaustion and bronchitis.

Ming Tsai is a Chinese-American fusion cuisine chef, restaurateur, and Emmy Award-winning television personality. Tsai currently hosts Ming's Quest,... a cooking show featured on the Fine Living Network, and Simply Ming on American Public Television. He was eliminated in week 7 of the third season of the Food Network's cooking competition, The Next Iron Chef. Tsai was born in California, but raised in Dayton, Ohio, where he attended The Miami Valley School. He often helped his parents Stephen and Iris with their family restaurant, Mandarin Kitchen. Ming's maternal grandfather is the renowned Chinese conductor Dr. Baochen Li; his paternal grandfather graduated from the Department of Economics at Peking University. Tsai's uncle and brother are mechanical engineers. His father, Dr. Stephen W. Tsai, born in Beijing and an alumnus of Yale University , is a Professor Research Emeritus, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford University. Tsai transferred to Phillips Academy and later Yale University where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Taylor Phillip Dent is a retired professional tennis player from the United States. He won 4 ATP singles titles during his career: Newport , Bangkok... , Memphis , and Moscow , and reached the finals of three other events on tour. His victory in Memphis is still often referred to as his most impressive victory, as he beat future world #1 Andy Roddick in the final. Dent played with distinction at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where he made a push all the way to the semifinals, where he was defeated by eventual gold medalist Nicolás Massú of Chile. He went on to lose the bronze medal match 16-14 in the 3rd set against Fernando González of Chile. Dent, paired with Lisa Raymond, won the 2006 Hopman Cup, defeating the Netherlands two sets to one in the final. In 2006 Dent did not play many competitive matches, due to a recurring back and groin problem. Dent had back surgery on March 19, 2007. On May 26, 2008 Dent received a wild card and played at the Carson challenger in the United States. It was his first match since February 2006. He lost his first round match to Cecil Mamiit.

Howard Alden is an American jazz guitarist born in Newport Beach, California. He has recorded a long series of albums for Concord Records. His... performances were dubbed over Sean Penn as 'Emmet Ray' in the 1999 Woody Allen film Sweet and Lowdown. Howard has recorded four albums with seven-string guitar innovator George Van Eps. Howard Alden was born in Newport Beach, California in 1958. He began playing the 4-string tenor guitar and banjo at age ten. After hearing recordings of Barney Kessel, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and other jazz guitar greats, he got a six-string guitar and started teaching himself to play that as well. As a teenager he played both instruments at various venues in the Los Angeles area. He studied guitar with Jimmy Wyble when he was 16. By 1977 he was studying jazz guitar at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, California with Howard Roberts. Alden made his first trip to the east coast in the summer of 1979, playing in a trio led by the legendary vibist Red Norvo for 3 months at Resorts International in Atlantic City.
