Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are an Australian alternative rock band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 1983 by frontman Nick Cave,... multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey and guitarist Blixa Bargeld. The band has included international personnel throughout its career and currently includes Cave, violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn P. Casey, keyboardist Conway Savage, and percussionists Thomas Wydler and Jim Sclavunos. The band was founded after the demise of Cave and Harvey's former group, The Birthday Party. Alternating from the noise rock roots of their contemporaries, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have a distinctive take on alternative rock that has been influenced by various genres, including punk rock, gothic rock, no wave and blues. Their early material—From Her to Eternity , The Firstborn Is Dead , Your Funeral My Trial and Tender Prey —had a primarily post-punk sound; however, as the band progressed, they began to incorporate more refined singer-songwriter elements. Their latest release, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! , also experimented with garage rock, inspired by their side project Grinderman.

Grinderman was an alternative rock band formed by Nick Cave , Warren Ellis , Martyn P. Casey and Jim Sclavunos in London, United Kingdom in 2006.... All members are also active musicians in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and the band, originally known as Mini Seeds, were formed as "a way to escape the weight of The Bad Seeds." The band's name is inspired by a Memphis Slim song, "Grinder Man Blues," which Cave is noted to have started singing during one of the band's early rehearsal sessions. Their eponymous debut album, Grinderman, was released in 2007 to extremely positive reviews. The band's second studio album, Grinderman 2, was released in 2010 and received a similar reception.

Tuff Monks was a short-lived band consisting of Nick Cave, Mick Harvey and Rowland S. Howard with Robert Forster, Lindy Morrison and Grant McLennan... . Their only release was the 1982 7" 45 rpm single "After the Fireworks", on the Australian label Au Go Go Records. The collaboration came about when The Go-Betweens and The Birthday Party found themselves by happenstance with overlapping booked studio time at AAV studio in Melbourne. The Birthday Party were having trouble completing their album Junkyard, and the two bands decided to join forces on a song during downtime. The idea to join forces, as well as the lyrics of "After the Fireworks" are Nick Cave's, while the drums are distinctly Lindy Morrison's. The band's name was coined by Nick Cave's girlfriend, Anita Lane. The collaboration only ever appeared live once, at Richmond's Tiger Lounge venue doing a cover version of "Ring of Fire". The song was released as a single the same year by Keith Glass, owner of the label Missing Link, who explained that he did so to recoup money he had lost on The Birthday Party in studio time.
