The Norwalk River Railroad Bridge is a swing bridge built in 1896 for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. It currently carries Amtrak and... Metro-North Railroad trains over the Norwalk River. In 1896, the New Haven Railroad built the bridge and widened its route to four tracks, as it simultaneously built its South Norwalk Railroad Bridge over the intersection of Washington Street with North Main and South Main streets. The 562-foot span, with a rotating swing span 202 feet long was provided by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of East Berlin, Connecticut. This type of swing bridge is one of just two on the Northeast Corridor. The swing span has a rim-bearing system of 96 rollers, allowing tall vessels to pass underneath. The span is one of only 13 of the company's bridges that survive in the state as of August 2001. In 1907 the rail line was electrified with overhead catenary wires, which form a prominent feature of the bridge today. It is or was also known as Norwalk River Bridge. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The South Norwalk Railroad Bridge is an 1895 bridge in Norwalk, Connecticut. It carries the four sets of Metro-North railroad tracks across the busy... intersection of Main Street and Washington Street in the South Norwalk section of the city. The bridge is adjacent to the South Norwalk Switch Tower Museum, which showcases the railroad switch tower where tracks were physically switched at the intersection of the Danbury Branch and the New Haven Line. The bridge is a contributing structure in the South Main and Washington Streets Historic District.

Ruth Chatterton was an American actress, novelist, and early aviatrix. Chatterton was born in New York City, on Christmas Eve 1892, to Walter Smith... and Lillian Reed Chatterton. She was of English and French extraction, and a descendant of the English poet Thomas Chatterton. Her parents separated while she was still quite young. In order to help support her family financially, she left school at fourteen and began her career on Broadway. Chatterton started off as a chorus girl in a stage play and by the age of eighteen had become a star of the American stage. Her greatest success onstage came in 1914 when she starred in the play Daddy Long Legs, adapted from the novel by Jean Webster. In 1924, she married British actor Ralph Forbes, who starred opposite her that same year in The Magnolia Lady, a musical versional of the A.E. Thomas and Alice Duer Miller hit Come Out of the Kitchen. Chatterton moved to Hollywood with Forbes in 1928, and with the help of Emil Jannings, was cast in her first film role in Sins of the Fathers. That same year she was signed to a contract by Paramount Pictures.

Arthur Jacob Arshawsky , better known as Artie Shaw, was an American jazz clarinetist, composer, and bandleader. He was also the author of both... fiction and non-fiction writings. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of America's most popular big bands of the late 1930s and early '40s. Their signature song, a 1938 version of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine", was a wildly successful single and one of the era's defining recordings. Musically restless, Shaw was also an early proponent of Third Stream, which blended classical and jazz, and recorded some small-group sessions that flirted with be-bop before retiring from music in 1954. Born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky in New York City, Shaw grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where, according to his autobiography his natural introversion was deepened by local antisemitism. Shaw began learning the saxophone when he was 13 years old, and by the age of 16, he switched to the clarinet and left home to tour with a band. Returning to New York, he became a session musician through the early 1930s.

Horace Silver , born Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silva in Norwalk, Connecticut, is an American jazz pianist and composer. Silver is known for his... distinctive humorous and funky playing style and for his pioneering compositional contributions to hard bop. He was influenced by a wide range of musical styles, notably gospel music, African music, and Latin American music and sometimes ventured into the soul jazz genre. His father, who was known as John Tavares Silva, was from the island of Maio in Cape Verde. His mother was born in New Canaan, Connecticut, and was of Irish-African descent. Silver began his career as a tenor saxophonist but later switched to piano. His tenor saxophone playing was highly influenced by Lester Young, and his piano style by Bud Powell. Silver was discovered in the Sundown Club in Hartford, Connecticut. in 1950 by saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz was playing at the club with Silver’s trio backing him up. Getz liked Silver’s band and brought them on the road, eventually recording three of Silver’s compositions. It was with Getz that Silver made his recording debut.

Andrew Aitken "Andy" Rooney was an American radio and television writer. He was most notable for his weekly broadcast "A Few Minutes with Andy... Rooney," a part of the CBS News program 60 Minutes from 1978 to 2011. His final regular appearance on 60 Minutes aired October 2, 2011. He died one month later, on November 4, 2011, at age 92. Andrew Rooney was born in Albany, New York, the son of Walter Scott Rooney and Ellinor Rooney . He attended The Albany Academy, and later attended Colgate University in Hamilton in Central New York, where he was initiated into the Sigma Chi fraternity, before he was drafted into the United States Army in August 1941. Rooney began his career in newspapers while in the Army when, in 1942, he began writing for Stars and Stripes in London during World War II. In February 1943, flying with the Eighth Air Force, he was one of six correspondents who flew on the second American bombing raid over Germany. Later, he was one of the first American journalists to visit the Nazi concentration camps near the end of World War II, and one of the first to write about them.

Frances Marion Dee was an American actress. She starred opposite Maurice Chevalier in the early talkie musical, The Playboy of Paris . She starred... in the film An American Tragedy in a role later recreated by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1951 retitled remake, A Place in the Sun. The younger daughter of Francis "Frank" Marion Dee and his wife, the former Henriette Putnam, Frances Marion Dee was born in Los Angeles, California, where her father was working as a civil-service examiner. She grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where she attended Shakespeare Grammar School and Hyde Park High School, where she went by the nickname of Frankie Dee. After graduating from Hyde Park High in 1927, of which she was vice president of her senior class, as well as voted Belle of the Year, she spent two years at the University of Chicago before returning to California. Following her sophomore year in 1929, she went on summer vacation with her mother and older sister to visit family in the Los Angeles, California area. She began working as a movie extra as a lark.

Calvin Murphy is a retired American professional basketball player who played as a guard for the NBA's San Diego/Houston Rockets from 1970-1983. He... is a former member of the Houston Rockets' broadcast team. He was also the host of ESPN Radio's The Calvin Murphy Show. Standing at a height of 5 feet 9 inches , Murphy has the distinction of being the shortest player inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Before basketball Calvin Murphy was a world class baton twirler. He says he was "bullied into it" as his mother and all six of her sisters were twirlers. As an 8th grader, in 1963, he won a national championship in baton twirling. His reputation as a twirler earned him invitations to perform at major sporting events and the 1964 New York World's Fair. In 1977, at the height of his basketball career in Houston, Murphy won the Texas State Men's Twirling Championship. He played basketball for Norwalk High School, where he was All-State three times and All-America twice. He is a member of the Connecticut Coaches Association Hall of Fame and a Connecticut Sportswriters Gold Key Award winner. Norwalk High School's address is now 23 Calvin Murphy Rd.

He graduated from Brien McMahon High School, where he was a self-described geology nerd. He was Homecoming King, captain of the tennis team, and was voted "best looking" and "favorite actor" by his high school class . He went on to attend Columbia University, from where he graduated in 2002 with a degree in film. Bruce Peter Weitz is an American actor. He is perhaps best known for his role as Sgt. Michael "Mick" Belker in the 1980s TV series Hill Street Blues... for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1984. Weitz was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of Sybil Weitz Rubel, a homemaker, and Alvin Weitz, who owned a liquor store. He is Jewish. Weitz appeared in the 1998 hit film Deep Impact and also appeared in the films Half Past Dead and El Cortez . Some of his many guest appearances on television include NYPD Blue, Quincy, Midnight Caller, Sisters, Superman: The Animated Series as Bruno Mannheim, JAG, The X-Files, The West Wing, and Highlander: The Series. He portrayed Anthony Zacchara on General Hospital from October to November 2007; from January 2008 to March 2009; on July 10, 2009; on August 13, 2009; and on September 3, 2009 to present. He also was in an episode of Matlock starring Andy Griffith, where he played a cop who was an old friend of Matlock. Weitz married actress Cecilia Hart in 1971. They were divorced in 1982, shortly after which she married actor James Earl Jones.

Roger Bart is an American musical theatre, film and television actor and singer. He has received Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Screen Actors... Guild Awards. Bart was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of a teacher and a chemical engineer, and grew up in Bernardsville, New Jersey. His uncle is journalist Peter Bart. He made his Broadway debut in Big River as Tom Sawyer in 1987. Additional theatre credits include Jonathan in the Alan Menken/Tim Rice musical King David, Harlequin in Triumph of Love, Snoopy in the Broadway revival of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown , Carmen Ghia and later Leo Bloom in The Producers , and The Frogs at Lincoln Center, which reunited him with fellow Producers star Nathan Lane and Susan Stroman. In 1996 and 1997, Bart appeared as Bud Frump in the U.S. national tour of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. On television, Bart played George Carlin's son on The George Carlin Show , and on Bram and Alice he portrayed Bram's assistant Paul Newman.

He began his career with Columbia Records, where he produced music for a wide variety of acts. Among his early production credits are the 1966 No. 2 hit song "Red Rubber Ball" by The Cyrkle. He produced Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company, Leonard Cohen's debut Songs of Leonard Cohen, Child Is Father to the Man by Blood, Sweat & Tears, Jackrabbit Slim by Steve Forbert among many other albums, and has recorded as a solo artist. He also played tuba in "Rag Mama Rag".
