The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law is a public law school and charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. According to... the 2010 U.S. News & World Report rankings, the Moritz College of Law is 35th in the nation overall and is in the top ten among public law schools. The specialty program in dispute resolution is ranked 5th in the nation. Founded in 1891 and elevated to college status in 1896, the College of Law has produced approximately 9,000 graduates. The university has recognized the College of Law through its Selective Investment Grants as a unit worthy of funding for innovative programs and top faculty. Moritz's faculty have been awarded University-wide teaching, diversity, and scholarship awards. Traditional fields, such a criminal law, employment law, labor law, commercial law, and international law are available, as well as emerging areas, such as alternative dispute resolution and cyberlaw/intellectual property. The Moritz College of Law offers the fifth ranked alternative dispute resolution program, as well as an array of clinical programs. In 1847 the disgruntled faculty members started the Willoughby Medical College of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio on the corner of High Street and Gay Street in half of the Clay Club house.

Paul John Flory was an American chemist and Nobel laureate who was known for his prodigious volume of work in the field of polymers, or... macromolecules. He was a leading pioneer in understanding the behavior of polymers in solution, and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1974 "for his fundamental achievements, both theoretical and experimental, in the physical chemistry of macromolecules." After graduating from Elgin High School in Elgin, Illinois in 1927, Flory received a bachelor's degree from Manchester College in 1931 and a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1934. His first position was at DuPont with Wallace Carothers. Flory's earliest work in polymer science was in the area of polymerization kinetics at the DuPont Experimental station. In condensation polymerization, he challenged the assumption that the reactivity of the end group decreased as the macromolecule grew, and by arguing that the reactivity was independent of the size, he was able to derive the result that the number of chains present decreased with size exponentially.

Howard Albert "Hopalong" Cassady is a former college and professional American football running back. He was the Heisman Trophy winner of 1955 and... was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. Cassady was born in Columbus, Ohio and attended the now closed Central High School. Cassady played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1952-55. During his college career, he scored 37 touchdowns in 36 games. He also played defensive back; a pass was never completed on him in his four years at the university. He was twice selected as a consensus All-American, in 1954 and 1955. In 1954 the Buckeyes finished the season 10-0 and won a consensus national championship. That year Cassady finished third in the vote for the Heisman Trophy behind Alan Ameche of Wisconsin. In 1955, Cassady won the Heisman Trophy , the Maxwell Award, and was named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year. Cassady earned the nickname "Hopalong" during his first game as a freshman for Ohio State. Columbus sportswriters who saw him play said he "hopped all over the field like the performing cowboy," a reference to the fictional character Hopalong Cassidy.

Melanie Rae Thon is an American writer, "widely regarded as one of the most original stylists writing fiction today." Thon has received grants from... the National Foundation for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. She has taught at Emerson College, Syracuse University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Ohio State University, and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Born in Montana, Thon currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thon is the author of three novels, Meteors in August, published in 1990; Iona Moon, published in 1993, and Sweet Hearts, published in 2001, and two short story collections, Girls in the Grass, published in 1991 and First, Body, published in 1997. Thon's short story "Letters in the Snow," is included in the The O. Henry Prize Stories 2006. The story was first published in the June 20, 2004 issue of One Story, a literary journal. "Letters in the Snow" is subtitled "for kind strangers and unborn children -- for the ones lost and most beloved." Her fiction has also been included in the anthology series Best American Short Stories .

Lonnie Thompson , is an American paleoclimatologist and Distinguished University Professor in the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State... University. He has achieved global recognition for his drilling and analysis of ice cores from mountain glaciers and ice caps in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. He and his wife, Ellen Mosley-Thompson, run the ice core paleoclimatology research group at the Byrd Polar Research Center. Lonnie Thompson was born July 1, 1948 in Gassaway, West Virginia. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Marshall University, where he majored in geology. He subsequently attended The Ohio State University where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geology. In the 1970s, he was the first scientist "to retrieve ice samples from a remote tropical ice cap and analyze them for ancient climate signals." He created the ice core research program at Ohio State while still a graduate student there. In regards to the dedication required to attain this ice, one author writes: For comparison, the Everest lower base camp is at 5,380 m and the upper base camp is at 6,500 m .
