Oshawa

The Oshawa Civic Auditorium was a 3,625–seat multi-purpose arena in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The recreational complex was financed by... donations from the community, including United Auto Workers members. It opened in 1964, and was home to the Oshawa Generals ice hockey team of the Ontario Hockey League from December 1964 to October 2006. The auditorium sat idle until April, 2010 when demolition began. The arena was part of a larger recreational complex including a swimming pool, tennis courts and soccer fields. The complex is located at 99 Thornton Road South in the city's west end, with close proximity to Highway 401. The arena was built as a replacement home for the Oshawa Generals, when the Hambly Arena burned down on September 15, 1953. The Generals resumed play in 1962–63 as part of the Metro Junior A League playing out of Maple Leaf Gardens, then returned to the Ontario Hockey League for the 1963–64 season sponsored by the Boston Bruins. The team played in nearby Bowmanville, Ontario for one season until construction on the new arena was finished. John Hanson was a Canadian-born British tenor and actor, who starred in several West End musicals during the 1950s and 1960s. Born John Stanley... Watts in Oshawa, Canada, of English parents, who moved back across the Atlantic three years later. He was educated at Dumfries Academy in Dumfries, Scotland. His headmaster recognised his talent as a boy soprano, and recommended him to the Scottish Broadcasting Corporation. It was there that he made his debut, at the age of 12. His 1961 album, The Sudent Prince / The Vagabond King peaked at #9 in the UK Albums Chart. Hanson was most famous for his role as the "Red Shadow", the hero of the musical The Desert Song, which enjoyed a record-breaking revival at the Palace Theatre in 1967. He also appeared in the 1973 Christmas Special of the BBC's Morecambe and Wise Show in which he sang "Stout-Hearted Men". Hanson died in December 1998, at the age of 76, in Shepperton, Surrey, England.

Andrea Joy "A. J." Cook-Andersen is a Canadian actress best known for her role as Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer "JJ" Jareau in the CBS crime... drama Criminal Minds. She has also appeared in several Hollywood films including The Virgin Suicides, Out Cold, and Final Destination 2. Cook was born in Oshawa, Ontario and spent most of her life growing up in Whitby where she attended Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute. Her father, Mike, is a teacher, and her mother, Sandra, works as a psychiatrist. She has three siblings, Nathan, Paul, and Angela. Cook is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A dancer from age four, Cook began taking jazz, tap and ballet lessons. She danced competitively for many years, before deciding at the age of 16 that she wanted to try acting. Cook's first job was in a McDonald's commercial in 1997. She graduated to series work with a guest role on the television series Goosebumps, and parts in two television movies, In His Father's Shoes and Elvis Meets Nixon. Cook launched her feature film career as one of five captivating suicidal sisters in 1999's The Virgin Suicides.

In July 2007, earning at an estimated total of $2 million in the past 12 months, Forbes named her thirteenth in the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels. In 2007 she modeled for Jones New York, Tumi, Tiffany & Co, Nautica, and Chloé. The following year, she appeared in the Valentino Spring/Summer 2008 campaign.

Jerry Edmonton was the drummer for the rock band, Steppenwolf. He was born Gerald McCrohan in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Both he and his brother... Dennis, also known as Mars Bonfire, changed their surnames to Edmonton during the 1960s, when they performed in a group called The Sparrows. John Kay and Goldy McJohn joined this group in Toronto in 1965 and, after some more changes in personnel and relocating to California, the group was renamed Steppenwolf. When Steppenwolf temporarily broke up on February 14, 1972, Edmonton and Steppenwolf organist Goldy McJohn formed the band Seven with singer Lance Gullickson and guitarist Robin Huff. After Seven, Edmonton and McJohn formed Manbeast with Rod Prince and Roy Cox of Bubble Puppy before Steppenwolf reconvened in 1974 for three albums before breaking up again in 1976. Edmonton died in a car accident in Santa Ynez, California in 1993.

Larry O'Connor is a politician in Ontario, Canada. He is the former mayor of the township of Brock, Ontario, and previously served as a New... Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995. Before entering political life, O'Connor was a member of the political action committee of the Canadian Auto Workers Local 222 in Oshawa. O'Connor was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1990 provincial election, defeating Liberal incumbent Bill Ballinger by 1,230 votes in the riding of Durham—York. The NDP were defeated in the 1995 provincial election, having lost much of their support base in the Greater Toronto Area. O'Connor, running for re-election, finished a distant second against Progressive Conservative Julia Munro. He planned to run for the federal New Democratic Party in Oshawa in the 2004 federal election, but lost the NDP nomination to Sid Ryan. In 2002–03, O'Connor supported Bill Blaikie for the leadership of the federal NDP.

Gregory Kean Williams is a Canadian television actor. He is perhaps best known for his role as Clancy Lass in the television series Dead Like Me.... Kean was born in Oshawa, Ontario, the son of Dorothy and Rex Williams. He earned an M.F.A. from Cornell University. His first acting role was either a dancing rabbit named "Nibbles" in a grade 5 presentation of the operetta "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" or as another bunny in an Easter play both at Adelaide McLaughlin Public School in Oshawa, Ontario in 1973. As a stage actor, Greg has been a resident company member of the Alley Theatre in Houston Texas. He also has worked with the Los Angeles Theater Centre and the New Mexico Rep as well as the first Actor's Equity Association sanctioned production of Tony and Tina's Wedding in Los Angeles. Greg is also an acting teacher and one of the owners of the William Davis Centre for Actors Study in Vancouver, British Columbia along with Dead Like Me colleague Christine Willes. Mr. Kean is currently teaching drama at Southpointe Academy, a private school located in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada.
