Frank Clair Stadium is a Canadian football stadium in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located in Lansdowne Park, on the southern edge of The Glebe... neighbourhood, where Bank Street crosses the Rideau Canal. The stadium was the home of the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League from 1908 to 1996, when the team ceased operations. It was the home of the Ottawa Renegades from 2002 until 2005. A previous incarnation of the stadium served as the home venue of the Ottawa Giants minor-league baseball franchise. The stadium is also home to University of Ottawa's Ottawa Gee-Gees, and prior to the disbanding of the Ravens football programme at Carleton University in 1998, was the site of the Panda Bowl, when these rivals played each other with rowdy fans hurling insults across both sides of the stadium. At the final Panda Bowl game in 1997, the year following the departure of the Riders from Ottawa, the game was marred by an accident when at least 25 students were injured when a section of railing collapsed. The stadium has also been home to the Ottawa Junior Riders of the Quebec Junior Football League and the Ottawa Bootleggers of the Empire Football League.

The Fairmont Château Laurier is a landmark hotel in Downtown Ottawa, Ontario located near the intersection of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive... designed in the Châteauesque style. Château Laurier was commissioned by Grand Trunk Railway president Charles Melville Hays, and was constructed between 1909 and 1912 in tandem with Ottawa's downtown Union Station across the street. The plans for the hotel initially generated some controversy as the Château was to be constructed on what was then a portion of Major's Hill Park. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, then the Prime Minister of Canada, helped secure the important site for the construction, and the hotel was eventually named in his honour. Laurier's government was also subsidizing the Grand Trunk Railway's Pacific Line. Further conflict ensued when the original architect, Bradford Gilbert, from New York was dismissed due to disagreements with Grand Trunk executives, and the Montreal firm of Ross and Macfarlane was hired to complete the design. The hotel was to be opened on 26 April 1912, but Hays, who was returning to Canada for the hotel opening, perished aboard the RMS Titanic when it sank on 15 April.

The Lord Elgin Hotel is a prominent hotel in downtown Ottawa, Canada with 355 guest rooms, located at 100 Elgin Street at Laurier Avenue, across from... Confederation Park. The twelve-storey limestone structure was named after James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, the first Governor General of the united Canadas. The hotel was designed by the prestigious firm of Ross and Macdonald, which were the successors of Ross and MacFarlane, who designed the Chateau Laurier. It was opened in 1941 by the Ford Hotel Company to compete with the Château Laurier. Unlike the Château, however, the Lord Elgin was built to primarily serve short-stay guests, particularly those who were in Ottawa on government and military business during the Second World War, especially after the recent loss of the nearby Russell Hotel. As a result, the hotel did not originally contain any ballrooms or elegant restaurants, as would have been expected in a large hotel at that time, and the guest rooms were relatively small. The building features stone walls which are complete with broken courses and are finished by flattened oriel windows and modernistic chevrons.

The United States Embassy in Ottawa opened in 1999. Before this date the mission occupied a 1930s era building directly across from Parliament Hill... at 100 Wellington Street. The Beaux-Arts structure was designed by Cass Gilbert for the American legation in 1932 , then as a full embassy after 1943. The older building, a three storey Indiana limestone built in 1930-1931, proved to be too small, however, and embassy employees were spread between eight other Ottawa buildings. Security concerns associated with this distribution necessitated centralization. The road to a new embassy was a long and difficult one, with attempts made at getting a new structure beginning in the 1960s. Finding an appropriate site and receiving acceptance from both governments proved to be difficult; one proposal to build the embassy in Rockcliffe Park, near the Canada Aviation Museum, was opposed by locals who worried about security threats and congestion. The new embassy is located on what used to be a small hill and parking lot on the western edge of the Byward Market.

The Canadian Museum of Nature is a natural history museum in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Its collections, which were started by the Geological Survey... of Canada in 1856, include all aspects of the intersection of human society and nature, from gardening to gene-splicing. The Museum is affiliated with the Canadian Museums Association, the Canadian Heritage Information Network, and the Virtual Museum of Canada. The building, known as the Victoria Memorial Museum Building, was built in former farm fields known as Appin Place, the estate of the Scottish-born merchant, William Stewart. The neighbourhood became known as Stewarton and residential development started in the area during the 1870s. The government purchased the land in 1905 hoping to develop the site as a sort of 'end piece' to complement the stone structure of the Canadian Parliament Buildings at the opposite end of Metcalfe Street, on Parliament Hill. This massive stone structure is an excellent example of early 20th-century architecture in Ottawa, and was built for $1,250,000 by architect David Ewart who is responsible for many similar structures around the city.

Laurier House is a National Historic Site of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, located at 335 Laurier Avenue East . It was formerly the residence of... two Canadian Prime Ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King. The house was built in 1878, but had significant later alterations. Laurier House exhibits elements of the Italianate manner as well as traces of Second Empire style. Laurier lived there from 1897 until his death in 1919. His wife willed the house to Mackenzie King upon her death. King lived there 1923 until his death in 1950. King willed the house to the people of Canada upon his death. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography is an gallery of Canada's best art and documentary photography. Founded in 1985 and affiliated to... the National Gallery of Canada, it is housed at the National Gallery of Canada, located at 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. The roots of the collection reach back to the 1939 Stills Photography Division of the National Film Board of Canada and it did not have a permanent home until it moved to its purpose-built site at 1 Rideau Canal. The building, which was opened on May 7, 1992, was designed by architect Michael Lundhom, who adapted an old railway tunnel running alongside the Chateau Laurier. The glass and concrete entrance from the street, reminiscent of the colonnade leading into the National Gallery, lead patrons down to the main part of the museum which was located below street level. On March 29, 2009 it was announced that the CMCP, which had been closed temporarily in 2006 due to a leak, would be permanently closed for conversion to committee rooms. Its collections and program of exhibitions have since been absorbed by the National Gallery of Canada.

The Canada and the World Pavilion was a small museum in Ottawa, Canada. Exhibits were devoted to Canada's contribution to sport, arts and culture,... development, peacekeeping, and science. Interactive exhibits, activities, and special events are held at the facility and in the surrounding parkland. With spectacular views to the north, the building overlooks the historic Rideau Falls and the Ottawa River. At 50 Sussex Drive, it is the next-door neighbour to the Embassy of France. After several years of mediocre attendance, the facility closed in the fall of 2005. As of summer 2007 there are discussions of the building either being used by the Governor General for staff offices or being offered to an Embassy.

Jonathan David Dore is a Canadian comedian and actor. Dore spent three years co-hosting Rogers Television's Daytime. For his work, creativity and... quick improv skills, he received the Impression Award for best on-air personality in 2001. Dore started his stand up career at Yuk Yuk's Ottawa new talent nights. Dore is most recognized for his part on CTV's Canadian Idol as the former correspondent reporting on the pressures and excitement of the contest with his unique brand of humour. Dore has also appeared on his own Comedy Now! special for CTV and The Comedy Network, and was featured on the A Channel's comedy special Toronto Laughs. His show, The Jon Dore Television Show, can be seen on The Comedy Network in Canada, and on the Independent Film Channel in the United States. In July 2008, Dore appeared on Comedy Central's stand-up show, Live at Gotham along with several other comedians. In 2010, he appeared in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Dore has toured in both Canada and the United States. In March 2011, he hosted Funny as Hell on HBO Canada, a show featuring edgy, politically incorrect, alternative, or musical comedy acts.

Kelly Sheridan is a Canadian voice actress based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sheridan has voiced various roles in anime and other... animated cartoons, such as Barbie in the majority of the computer generated Barbie film series since 2001. She also voiced Sango in the dubbed version of the anime series InuYasha, Diana in the Martin Mystery series, and Theresa in Class of the Titans. Mark Douglas Brown McKinney is a Canadian comedian and actor, best known for his work in the sketch comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall. From 2003 to 2006, he co-created, wrote and starred in the acclaimed mini-series Slings and Arrows, a TV show about a Canadian theatre company struggling to survive while a crazy genius director haunted by his dead mentor helps the actors find authenticity in their acting. McKinney was born in Canada, the son of Chloe, an architectural writer, and Russell McKinney, a diplomat. Because of his father's career, he did a lot of traveling when he was young. Some of the places he lived while growing up were Trinidad, Paris, Mexico, and Washington, D.C. He also attended Trinity College School, a boarding school in Port Hope, Ontario. For a short while, McKinney was a student at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he was a political science major. Kristina Groves is a Canadian speedskater. She is Canada’s most decorated skater in the World Single Distances Championships with 13 career... medals in this event. She won four Olympic medals: She won two silver medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, in the 1,500 meters and team pursuit. . and she won the Silver Medal in the Speedskating Ladies' 1500 m and the Bronze Medal in the Speedskating Ladies' 3000 m events at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. She is currently ranked 6th on the women's Adelskalender, her teammates Cindy Klassen and Christine Nesbitt are ranked 1st and 7th respectively. Groves made her Olympic debut in Salt Lake City for the 2002 Winter Olympics held in the United States. She finished 20th at 1500m, 8th at 3000m and 10th at 5000m. Four years later, during the 2006 Winter Olympics games held in Turin, Italy, Groves participated in five events . She finished 5th at 1000m, 2nd at the 1500m, 8th at the 3000m, 6th at the 5000m and 2nd for the team pursuit with the Canadian team. She was the 2008 Single Distances World Champion on the 3000-m.

Bruce Douglas Cockburn OC is a Canadian folk/rock guitarist and singer-songwriter. His most recent album was released in March 2011. He has written... songs in styles ranging from folk to jazz-influenced rock to rock and roll. Bruce Cockburn was born in 1945 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and spent some of his early years on a farm outside Pembroke, Ontario. He has stated in interviews that his first guitar was one he found around 1959 in his grandmother's attic, which he adorned with golden stars and used to play along to radio hits. Cockburn was a student at Nepean High School, where his 1964 yearbook photo states his desire "to become a musician." He attended Berklee School of Music in Boston for three semesters in the mid-1960s. In 1966 he joined an Ottawa band called The Children, which lasted for about a year. In the spring of 1967 he joined the final lineup of The Esquires. He moved to Toronto that summer to form The Flying Circus with former Bobby Kris & The Imperials members Marty Fisher and Gordon MacBain and ex-Tripp member Neil Lillie.

Paul Albert Anka, OC is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor. Anka first became famous as a teen idol in the late 1950s and 1960s with hit songs... like "Diana", "Lonely Boy", and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder". He went on to write such well-known music as the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones's biggest hits, "She's a Lady", and the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature song, "My Way" . In 1983, he co-wrote with Michael Jackson the song "I Never Heard", which was retitled and released in 2009 under the name "This Is It". An additional song that Jackson co-wrote with Anka from this 1983 session, "Love Never Felt So Good", has since been discovered, and will be released in the near future. The song was also released by Johnny Mathis in 1984. Anka became a naturalized US citizen in 1990. Anka was born in Ottawa, Ontario in Canada to Andy and Camelia Anka who owned a restaurant called The Locanda there. His parents are of Lebanese descent. He sang with the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church choir under the direction of Frederick Karam, with whom he studied music theory.

Lorne Greene, OC , was the stage name of Lyon Himan Green, a Canadian actor and musician. His television roles include Ben Cartwright on the western... Bonanza, and Commander Adama in the science fiction movie and subsequent TV Series Battlestar Galactica. He also worked on the Canadian television nature documentary series Lorne Greene's New Wilderness, and in television commercials as a dog food spokesman. Greene was born in Ottawa, Ontario, to Russian Jewish immigrants, Daniel and Dora Green . He was called "Chaim" by his mother, and his name is shown as "Hyman" on his school report cards. In his biography, the author, his daughter Linda Greene Bennett, stated that it was not known when he began using "Lorne", nor when he added an "e" to Green. Greene began acting while attending Queen's University in Kingston, where he also acquired a knack for broadcasting with the Radio Workshop of the university's Drama Guild on the campus radio station CFRC. He gave up on a career in chemical engineering and, upon graduation, found a job as a radio broadcaster for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation .
