Paramount on Parade

Edmund Goulding was a British film writer and director. As an actor early in his career he was one of the 'Ghosts' in the 1922 British made Paramount silent Three Live Ghosts alongside Norman Kerry and Cyril Chadwick. Also in the early 20s he wrote several screenplays for star Mae Murray and... directed by her then husband Robert Z. Leonard. Goulding is best remembered for directing cultured dramas and such as Love , Grand Hotel with Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford, Dark Victory with Bette Davis, and The Razor's Edge with Gene Tierney and Tyrone Power. He also directed the classic film noir Nightmare Alley with Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell, and the action drama The Dawn Patrol. He was also a successful songwriter, composer, and producer. Before moving to films, Goulding was an actor, playwright and director on the London stage. Interviewed about his Goulding biography Edmund Goulding's Dark Victory , film historian Matthew Kennedy stated: He not only directed many types of films, but he took on multiple functions on each set.

Ernst Lubitsch was a German American film director. His urbane comedies of manners gave him the reputation of being Hollywood's most elegant and sophisticated director; as his prestige grew, his films were promoted as having "the Lubitsch touch." In 1947 he received an Honorary Academy Award for... his distinguished contributions to the art of the motion picture, and he was nominated three times for Best Director. Lubitsch was born in Berlin, the son of Anna and Simon Lubitsch , a tailor. His family was Ashkenazi Jewish, his father born in Grodno and his mother from Wriezen-on-the-Oder, outside Berlin. He turned his back on his father's tailoring business to enter the theater, and by 1911, he was a member of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater. He made his film debut the following year as an actor, but he gradually abandoned acting to concentrate on directing. In 1918, he made his mark as a serious director with Die Augen der Mumie Ma , starring Pola Negri. Lubitsch alternated between escapist comedies and large-scale historical dramas, enjoying great international success with both.

Victor L. Schertzinger was an American composer, film director, film producer, and screenwriter. His films include Paramount on Parade , Something to Sing About with James Cagney, and the first two "Road" pictures Road to Singapore and Road to Zanzibar . His two best-known songs are "I Remember... You" and "Tangerine", both with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and both featured in Schertzinger's final film The Fleet's In . Schertzinger was born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, the child of musical parents of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, and immediately attracted attention as a violin prodigy at the age of four. As a child of eight, he appeared as a violinist with several orchestras, including the Victor Herbert Orchestra and the John Philip Sousa band. In his teens, he attended the Brown Preparatory School in Philadelphia, and gave violin performances while touring America and Europe. Schertzinger studied music at the University of Brussels. He continued to distinguish himself as a concert violinist, and then as a symphony conductor.

Dorothy Arzner was an American film director. Her directorial career in feature films spanned from the late 1920s into the early 1940s, a time period in which there were very few—if any—other women working in the field. Born in San Francisco, California, Arzner grew up in Los Angeles,... where her father owned a restaurant frequented by many Hollywood celebrities. After finishing high school, she enrolled at the University of Southern California with hopes of becoming a doctor. During World War I, she left school to work overseas in the ambulance corps. By the time the war ended, she decided against returning to her medical studies and, after a visit to a movie studio, decided to pursue a career as a film director. Through connections with director William C. DeMille, Dorothy got a job at Paramount Pictures. She started out as a stenographer. She moved on to be a script writer, was promoted to film editor within six months and quickly mastered the job. Her first assignment as an editor was in 1922 for the renowned classic Blood and Sand, starring Rudolph Valentino. She was soon receiving accolades for the high quality of her work.

A. Edward Sutherland aka Eddie Sutherland was a film director and actor. Born Albert Edward Sutherland in London, he was from a theatrical family. His father, Al Sutherland, was a theatre manager and producer and his mother, Julie Ring, was a vaudeville performer. He was a nephew of both Blanche... Ring and Thomas Meighan, who was married to another of his mother's sisters Frances Ring. Sutherland acted in 37 known films early in his career, beginning as a Keystone Cop in Tillie's Punctured Romance , which starred Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, and Marie Dressler. He was directed by Charles Chaplin in A Woman of Paris , two years before Sutherland began his directing career with the help of Chaplin. It is as a director that he is best known, and he directed over 50 movies between 1925 and 1956. His breakout film was Behind the Front which made stars of the two leads and established Sutherland as a comedic director.

Frank Tuttle was a Hollywood film director and writer who directed films from 1922 to 1959 . His output includes The American Venus , the all-star revue Paramount on Parade , the murder mystery The Benson Murder Case , the comedy film This Is the Night with Cary Grant, and Roman Scandals ... starring Eddie Cantor. On his death in 1963, at the age of 70, Tuttle was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
