The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences is a constituent, semi-autonomous part of Penn State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. The College... was founded in 1896 as a School of Mines, but, over time, diversified becoming the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The college has five departments: Energy and Mineral Engineering, Geography, Geosciences, Materials Science and Engineering, and Meteorology. The Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering, as of fall 2007, now offers an undergraduate program in energy engineering, the first of its kind in the country. The College also includes The Alliance for Earth Science, Engineering, and Development in Africa , The Energy Institute, The Earth and Environmental Systems Institute , The John A. Dutton e-Education Institute, and The Peter R. Gould Center for Geography and Outreach. It is currently the smallest college at the University Park campus. Five current staff members contributed to the efforts of the IPCC that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Information Sciences and Technology is a major offered at 19 campuses with 142 faculty state wide and 42 faculty at the University Park main campus.... There are 5 associate degree options and 2 bachelor’s degree majors. 89 students are currently studying IST as a graduate school option. The College of Information Science and Technology was created in 1997. Dean of the Graduate School, Rod Erickson, was appointed by Penn State President Graham Spanier to lead a strategic planning group that produced plans for the School of Information Sciences and Technology which admitted the first students into the IST program for the Fall 1999 semester. The Information Sciences and Technology Building is located on the west campus of the Pennsylvania State University’s University Park campus. The building is home to the College of Information Sciences and Technology and the Computer Science and Engineering department. It was formally opened in 2004. The 199,000-square-foot building was designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects in New York, New York and Perfido Weiskopf Architects in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The architecture was inspired by the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy.

The Schreyer Honors College is the honors program of the Pennsylvania State University. Founded in 1980 as the University Scholars Program, it was... expanded and renamed in 1997 in response to a $30 million gift by William and Joan Schreyer. Reader's Digest named Schreyers one of America's "top 100 innovations" in 2005, and in 2008, granted the college the designation of "Best Honors College" in America. The current Dean is Christian M. M. Brady. On November 17, 2006, the Schreyers pledged an additional gift of $25 million to the Schreyer Honors College. Having contributed more than $58 million to Penn State, they are the largest family donors in the school's history. Enrollment in the Schreyer Honors College is limited to a total of 1800 students, and requirements for freshman entrance include excellent high school grades, several essays, strong extracurricular activities, and teacher references. Admission is also granted to current Penn State students with strong academic and volunteer credentials during first- and/or second-year.

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao FRS is an Indian born statistician, currently professor emeritus at Penn State University and Research Professor at the... University at Buffalo. Rao has been honored by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time. He received an M.S. degree in mathematics from Andhra University and an M.S. degree in statistics from Calcutta University in 1943. Rao worked at the Indian Statistical Institute and the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge before acquiring a Ph.D. degree at King's College in Cambridge University under R.A. Fisher in 1948, to which he added a Sc.D. degree, also from Cambridge, in 1965.

Nina Vsevolod Fedoroff is an American professor at Penn State university known for her research in life sciences and biotechnology. She received in... 2006 the National Medal of Science in the field of Biological Sciences, the highest award for lifetime achievement in scientific research in the United States. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated summa cum laude in 1966 from Syracuse University with a dual major in biology and chemistry. She received her PhD in 1972 from The Rockefeller University. Fedoroff has been honored with the Howard Taylor Ricketts Award from University of Chicago in 1990. In 1997 Fedoroff received the John P. McGovern Science and Society Medal from Sigma Xi. Fedoroff arrived at Penn State in 1995 and founded and directed the organization now known as the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. In 2002, she was appointed an Evan Pugh professor, the university's highest academic honor. She currently holds the Verne M. Willaman chair of Life Sciences. President Bill Clinton appointed Fedoroff to the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science Foundation, in 2001.

Bruce Weigl is an American contemporary poet who teaches at Lorain County Community College. Weigl enlisted in the United States Army shortly after... his 18th birthday and spent three years in the service. He served in the Vietnam War from December 1967 to December 1968 and received the Bronze Star . When he returned to the United States, Weigl obtained a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, and a Master of Arts Degree in Writing/American and British Literature from the University of New Hampshire. From 1975-76, Weigl was an instructor at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. Weigl's first full-length collection of poems, A Romance, was published in 1979. After he received a Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 1979, he was an assistant professor of English at the University of Arkansas and later held the same position at Old Dominion University. Weigl additionally served as the president of the Associated Writing Programs. During the 1980s, Weigl published two more poetry collections, The Monkey Wars and Song of Napalm.

John Simmons Barth is an American novelist and short-story writer, known for the postmodernist and metafictive quality of his work. John Barth was... born in Cambridge, Maryland, and briefly studied "Elementary Theory and Advanced Orchestration" at Juilliard before attending Johns Hopkins University, receiving a B.A. in 1951 and an M.A. in 1952 . He was a professor at Penn State University , SUNY Buffalo , Boston University , and Johns Hopkins University before he retired in 1995. Barth began his career with The Floating Opera and The End of the Road, two short novels that deal wittily with controversial topics, suicide and abortion respectively. They are straightforward tales; as Barth later remarked, he "didn't know they were novels." The Sot-Weed Factor, Barth's next novel, is an 800-page satirical epic of the colonization of Maryland based on the life of an actual poet, Ebenezer Cooke, who wrote a poem of the same title.
