Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after the capital Sofia, with a population of 338,153 inhabitants according to the census from 2011. The city is situated in southern Bulgaria and is referred to as the "heart of Bulgaria" due to its location roughly at the center of the country. It is an important economic, transport, cultural and educational center, as well as the largest and most important city in Northern Thrace and the second in the wider international historical region of Thrace. Plovdiv's history spans some 6,000 years, with traces of a Neolithic settlement dating to... roughly 4000 BC; it is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city is provincial center of Plovdiv Province and administrative center of three municipalities, City of Plovdiv in a distinct municipality, Maritsa municipality and Rodopi municipality, which municipal triangle of Greater Plovdiv has a population of 403,153 inhabitants according to the census from 2011. The city is known in the West for most of its history by the Greek name Philippopolis. It was originally a Thracian before later becoming a Greek and a major Roman city.
