Louis Menand is an American writer and academic, best known for his book The Metaphysical Club , an intellectual and cultural history of late 19th... and early 20th century America. Menand was born in Syracuse, New York, and raised around Boston, Massachusetts. His mother was a historian, who wrote a biography of Samuel Adams. Menand's father, Louis Menand III, taught political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His grandfather and great-grandfather owned the Louis Menand House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The village of Menands, New York, is named after his great-grandfather, a famous 19th Century horticulturalist. A graduate of Pomona College, Menand attended Harvard Law School for one year before he left to earn a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University in 1980. Menand thereafter taught at Princeton University and held staff positions at The New Republic and The New Yorker. He served as Distinguished Professor of English at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York before accepting a post at Harvard in 2003. Roger Randall Dougan Revelle was a scientist and scholar who was instrumental in the formative years of the University of California, San Diego and... was one of the first scientists to study global warming and the movement of Earth's tectonic plates. UC San Diego's first college is named Revelle College in his honor. Roger Revelle was born in Seattle to William Roger Revelle and Ella Dougan, and grew up in southern California, graduating from Pomona College in 1929 with early studies in geology and then earning a Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of California, Berkeley in 1936. While at Cal, he studied under Dr. George D. Louderback and was initiated into Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity which started as a mining engineering fraternity and maintained a strong affinity for geology and geological engineering students. Much of his early work in oceanography took place at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. He was also Oceanographer for the Navy during WWII. He became director of SIO from 1950 to 1964.

Garrett Hongo is a Yonsei, fourth-generation Japanese American academic and poet. The work of this Pulitzer-nominated writer draws on Japanese... American history and own experiences. Hongo has attended Pomona College and the University of Michigan, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in English from the University of California at Irvine. Hongo has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rockefeller Foundation. Hongo is a professor of creative writing at the University of Oregon. From 1989 through 1993, he was the director of the university's Program in Creative Writing. Hongo has published two books of poetry: Yellow Light and The River of Heaven , which was a Lamont Poetry Selection of the Academy of American Poets and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Volcano: A Memoir of Hawai'i , was awarded the 2006 Oregon Book Award for Literary Nonfiction. Hongo has also worked as an editor on Songs My Mother Taught Me: Stories, Plays and Memoir by Wakako Yamauchi and on The Open Boat: Poems from Asian America .

Verlyn Klinkenborg is an American non-fiction author. Since 1997, he has been a member of the editorial board of The New York Times. His books... include The Rural Life, Making Hay, The Last Fine Time, and Timothy; or, Notes of an Abject Reptile. He has published articles in The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, Esquire, National Geographic, Mother Jones, and other periodicals. Klinkenborg was raised on an Iowa farm belonging to his family. He attended elementary school in Clarion, Iowa until the 6th grade at which time the family moved to Osage. He graduated from Pomona College, and holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Klinkenborg taught literature and creative writing at Fordham University while living in the Bronx in the early to mid-1980s, and later at St. Olaf College, Bennington College and Harvard University. In 1991 he received the Lila Wallace–Reader's Digest Writer's Award and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. He lives on a small farm in upstate New York. His most notable current writings are his editorial opinions which appear regularly in the New York Times; these are generally literary meditations on rural farm life.
