Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series

The award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series was first given in 1959 under the title "Best Direction of a Single program of a Drama Series" and has since been called "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Drama" from 1960-1973, "Best Directing in a Drama" for a single year in 1974 and in 1975 took its current title as "Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series".
