The Purdue University College of Science is one of eight major academic divisions, or Colleges, of Purdue University. The science courses offered by... the College of Science account for about one-fourth of Purdue's one million student credit hours. The College of Science contains seven minor academic divisions, or Departments. The College of Science, originally contained within Stanley Coulter Hall, has since dispersed to occupy many different buildings of the main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. For example, the Biology Department is located in Lilly Hall of Life Sciences, the Mathematics Department in the Mathematical Sciences Building, the Statistics Department in the Felix Haas Hall, the Physics Department in the Physics Building, and most of the Computer Science Department in the Lawson Computer Science Building . Other Departments are similarly scattered throughout the campus. Classes in the sciences have been taught since Purdue opened in 1874. In 1875, the first degree from Purdue — a bachelor's degree in chemistry — was granted in science. The School of Science was formally established in 1907.

With over 30,000 living... alumni, it is one of the largest technology schools in the United States and currently tied for first place in rankings. The College of Technology contains eight minor academic divisions, called Departments. The College of Technology is unique at Purdue in that its programs are offered at eleven different locations throughout the state of Indiana, including several locations that are not satellite campuses of the Purdue University System. This arrangement is collectively known as the College of Technology Statewide. Each Statewide location offers degree programs that follow the same curriculum requirements as those of the main campus in West Lafayette, although not all programs may be offered at Statewide locations. The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is Purdue University's school of biomedical engineering. The school offers an undergraduate B.S. degree... in biomedical engineering and M.S., Ph.D., and integrated M.D.-Ph.D. graduate degrees in biomedical engineering. Biomedical engineering at Purdue started in 1974 with the creation of the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center. The Center was headed by Dr. Leslie A. Geddes and located in Purdue's A.A. Potter Engineering Center. Currently, it is the only engineering discipline at Purdue that requires an entrance exam to be accepted into the program. In 1998, the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center was elevated in status to the Department of Biomedical Engineering within the school of Engineering at Purdue. George R. Wodicka was the department's founding head. After a generous $10 million donation by Norman Weldon, an alumnus of Purdue, and his family, the department was formally expanded into a school of biomedical engineering. The donation provided for hiring additional faculty, research initiatives and other start-up costs. In honor of Weldon's donation, the school is named The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.

The College of Health and Human Sciences consists of nine academic units: The College of Health and Human Sciences is distributed across three main buildings. Matthews Hall houses the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, the Center for Customer-Driven Quality, and Consumer and Family Sciences extension offices. Stone Hall contains the Consumer and Family Sciences administrative offices, the Departments of Foods and Nutrition and Hospitality and Tourism Management, and the John Purdue Room fine dining restaurant. The Center for Families and the Purdue Child Care Program are located in Fowler House. The Department of Child Development and Family Studies is split between Fowler House and the Child Development and Family Studies Building. The College of Health and Human Sciences was established in 2010 from the realignment of several existing academic units at Purdue.

Edward Mills Purcell was an American physicist who shared the 1952 Nobel Prize for Physics for his independent discovery of nuclear magnetic... resonance in liquids and in solids. Nuclear magnetic resonance has become widely used to study the molecular structure of pure materials and the composition of mixtures. See also Magnetic resonance imaging Born and raised in Taylorville, Illinois, Purcell received his BSEE in electrical engineering from Purdue University, followed by his M.A. and Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University. He was a member of the Alpha Xi chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma while at Purdue. After spending the years of World War II working at the MIT Radiation Laboratory on the development of microwave radar, Purcell returned to Harvard to do research. In December 1946, he discovered nuclear magnetic resonance with his colleagues Pound and Torrey. NMR provides scientists with an elegant and precise way of determining chemical structure and properties of materials, and is widely used in physics and chemistry.

Herbert Charles Brown was a chemist and Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate for his work with organoboranes. Brown was born Herbert Brovarnik in... London to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants from Zhitomir. He moved to the United States in June 1914, at the age of two. In autumn 1935, he entered the University of Chicago, completed two years of studies in three quarters, and earned a B.S. in 1936. That same year, he became a naturalized United States citizen. On February 6, 1937, Brown married Sarah Baylen, the person he credits with making him interested in hydrides of boron, a topic related to the work in which he with Georg Wittig won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 1979. Two years after starting graduate studies, he earned a Ph.D. in 1938, also from the University of Chicago. Unable to find a position in industry, he decided to accept an offer for a position as a post-doctorate. This became the beginning of his academic career. He became an Instructor at the University of Chicago in 1939, and held the position for four years before moving to Wayne University in Detroit as an Assistant Professor. In 1946, he was promoted to an Associate Professor.

Vernon Lomax Smith is professor of economics at Chapman University's Argyros School of Business and Economics and School of Law in Orange,... California, a research scholar at George Mason University Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science, and a Fellow of the Mercatus Center, all in Arlington, Virginia. Smith shared the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Daniel Kahneman. He is the founder and president of the International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics and a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington D.C.. In 2004 Smith was honored with an honorary doctoral degree at Universidad Francisco Marroquín, the institution that named the Vernon Smith Center for Experimental Economics Research, after him. Smith was born in Wichita, Kansas where he attended Wichita North High School and Friends University. He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Caltech in 1949, an M.A. in economics from the University of Kansas in 1952, and his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1955.

Julian Seymour Schwinger was an American theoretical physicist. He is best known for his work on the theory of quantum electrodynamics , in... particular for developing a relativistically invariant perturbation theory, and for renormalizing QED to one loop order. Schwinger is recognized as one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, responsible for much of modern quantum field theory, including a variational approach, and the equations of motion for quantum fields. He developed the first electroweak model, and the first example of confinement in 1+1 dimensions. He is responsible for the theory of multiple neutrinos, Schwinger terms, and the theory of the spin 3/2 field. Julian Seymour Schwinger was born in New York City, to a Polish Jewish family, who had immigrated to America. Both his father and his mother's parents were prosperous clothing manufacturers, although the family business declined after the 1929 Wall Street Crash. The family followed the Orthodox Jewish tradition.

Paul Erdős was a Hungarian mathematician. Erdős published more papers than any other mathematician in history, working with hundreds of... collaborators. He worked on problems in combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, classical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. He is also known for his "legendarily eccentric" personality. Paul Erdős was born in Budapest, Hungary on March 26, 1913. He was the only surviving child of Anna and Lajos Erdős ; his siblings died before he was born, aged 3 and 5. His parents were both Jewish mathematicians from a vibrant intellectual community. His fascination with mathematics developed early—at the age of three, he could calculate how many seconds a person had lived. Both of Erdős's parents were high school mathematics teachers, and Erdős received much of his early education from them. Erdős always remembered his parents with great affection. At 16, his father introduced him to two of his lifetime favorite subjects—infinite series and set theory.
