Texas A&M University–Kingsville is an American national university located in Kingsville, Texas. The student body is 62 percent Hispanic and includes students from 35 states and 43 foreign countries. The university has nationally recognized programs in engineering, agriculture, wildlife,... music, and the sciences and developed the nation's first doctoral degree in bilingual education. Texas A&M University–Kingsville is the oldest continuously operating public institution of higher learning in South Texas. The school was chartered as the South Texas Normal School in 1917; however, the opening of the school was delayed due to World War I. Founded in 1925 as South Texas State Teachers College, the university's name changed in 1929 to Texas College of Arts and Industries signaled the broadening of its mission. A 1967 name change to Texas A&I University marked another transition. The university became a member of the Texas A&M University System in 1989 and changed its name to to Texas A&M University–Kingsville in 1993. Wharton County Junior College is a two-year college based in Wharton, Texas which is home to its main campus. The college also has campuses in Richmond, Sugar Land, and Bay City. WCJC prepares students for a broad understanding of the liberal arts and sciences in order for students transferring to baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. The idea of starting Wharton County Junior College started in 1944 with the first session of classes beginning in 1946 with approximately 200 students. Freeport is a city in Brazoria County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area and is situated in Southeast Texas. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 12,708. The Dow Chemical Company is the major employer in Freeport, and the city is home... to the company's largest integrated site. Freeport is in the 14th congressional district, and is represented by Congressman Ron Paul. Freeport was officially founded in November 1912 by the Freeport Sulphur Company. The population was 300. However, by 1929, that population had grown to 3,500, and to 4,100 by 1939, influencing a steady increase of economic expansion in Freeport. By 1937, a Freeport School District had been established, consisting of several segregated schools and twenty-seven teachers. There were two white schools, one black school, and a high school. Freeport's most substantial economic growth began with the construction of Dow Chemical Company facilities in the city during 1939. This company still provides most of the economic resources of the community. It is the company's largest single site today.more
