The Hotel Roanoke is a luxury hotel located in the Gainsboro neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. Originally built in 1882, the hotel has been... renovated many times. It is currently owned by Virginia Tech and operated under the Doubletree Hotels brand. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The Hotel Roanoke was built in 1882 by the Norfolk and Western Railway , which had recently constructed its administrative offices in the city, bringing in over a thousand railroad workers. It officially opened on Christmas Day, 1882. In July, 1898, a fire started in the kitchen which shut down the hotel for several months. The hotel was reopened in January, 1899, restored with a few additions. The next major renovation took place in 1938, remodeling the hotel to have a more Tudor look. Additional new wings were added in 1947 and 1955. In 1989, Norfolk Southern deeded the Hotel Roanoke to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for $65,000 . After the flag lowering ceremony on November 30, the hotel was closed. Sale of the contents began and continued for 17 days.

Valley View Mall is a 800,000-square-foot regional shopping mall located in the Roundhill neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. It is located near the... interchange of Interstate 581 with Hershberger Road in the northwest section of the city. Most outparcel locations around Valley View Mall have been developed into restaurants, retail stores, offices, and hotels. Major surrounding stores include Ashley Furniture, Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Grand Home Furnishings, Wal-Mart, and Target. Regal Cinemas has a 16 screen movie theater with stadium seating at an outparcel location, which replaced a smaller six screen cinema inside the mall. The land that became Valley View Mall was a farm owned by the Huff family until the early 1980s. The sizable farm was unusual in that it was located within the city limits of Roanoke and directly beside Interstate 581. During a flight into Roanoke Regional Airport in 1976, Charlotte, North Carolina-based developer Henry Faison noticed the property and immediately realized its prime location beside Interstate 581 and a short distance from Interstate 81.

Mill Mountain Theatre is a regional performing arts theatre in Southwest Virginia. Mill Mountain Theater’s Board of Directors announced on... January 20, 2009 that the Theater would close its doors on January 21, 2009 in order to focus on reorganizing the Theater’s productions and business operations. Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory , the educational wing of Mill Mountain Theatre, has been the driving force in keeping the theatre alive since January 2009. MMTC has continued all spring, summer and fall classes and has done so more profitably than in the past. Operating under the direction of one employee and one contractor, MMTC has seen growth in applicants and attendance double since January of 2009. MMTC presented Annie, Jr. during the Holiday Season from December 10 - December 20, 2009. Annie Jr. MMTC plans to present Disney's "My Son Pinocchio, Geppetto's Musical Tale" in December of 2010. The O. Winston Link Museum is a museum dedicated to the photography of O. Winston Link, the twentieth century railroad photographer widely considered... the master of the juxtaposition between steam railroading and rural culture. Located in downtown Roanoke, Virginia, the museum is situated in a restored Norfolk & Western Railway passenger train station and opened in January 2004. It currently displays hundreds of photographic prints and has several interactive displays including audio that provide information on Link's photographic subjects.

Atiim Kiambu Hakeem-Ah "Tiki" Barber is an American football running back who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the New York Giants in... the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia. Barber retired from the NFL at the end of the 2006 NFL postseason as the New York Giants' all-time rushing and reception leader. On February 13, 2007, he was formally introduced as a correspondent for NBC's The Today Show and Football Night in America/Sunday Night Football. Tiki was also the host of NBC's pre-show for the 66th Golden Globe Awards with Brooke Burke and Nancy O'Dell. On September 18, 2007, Barber's book, Tiki: My Life and the Game Beyond was published. The autobiography was co-written by Gil Reavill. His second book, Tiki Barber's Pure Hard Workout, which was released on November 13, 2008, by Gotham Books, reveals Barber's intensive lifting program. The book is coauthored by his trainer, Joe Carini. He is the identical twin brother of Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber. On March 8, 2011, Barber filed papers with the NFL to come out of retirement.

Jamael Orondé "Rondé" Barber is an American football cornerback/safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. He... was drafted by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia. Barber attended Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Virginia, and was a standout in football, wrestling, and track. In football, he was a three time All-District selection. In track, he won the national title in the 55-meter hurdles as a senior. Drafted in the third round pick of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the University of Virginia. His brother Tiki was also drafted the same year, but went a round earlier than Ronde to the New York Giants. In his first season with the Bucs, Barber was unable to force his way into the lineup and played little, making a rare appearance in one game in the 1997 season . However, Barber had clearly made an impression on the then Bucs Head Coach Tony Dungy, and in his second season Barber started nine games, recording 81 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions.

Anthony White better known by his ring name "Tony Atlas" is an American bodybuilder, powerlifter, and professional wrestler who has held multiple... titles and championships in each sport. He is also known by his bodybuilding title, "Mr. USA" , the nom de guerre the "Black Superman", as well as an alter ego named Saba Simba. He returned as an on screen manager for WWE, appearing on its now-defunct ECW brand. Atlas started wrestling in 1975 for the National Wrestling Alliance World Wide/Mid Atlantic area. His debut, on July 10, was a tag team match with Bob Bruggers against Art Neilson and The Blue Scorpion. The match finished with Atlas winning the fall for his team with a sleeper hold on the Blue Scorpion. Throughout his career he worked for World Championship Wrestling , the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions, the World Wrestling Council , World Class Championship Wrestling , the American Wrestling Association , and the World Wrestling Federation . Among his regular partners were Tommy Rich , Dick Murdoch, and Rocky Johnson.

John Howard Payne was an American film actor who is mainly remembered as a singer in 20th Century Fox musical films, and for his leading roles in... Miracle on 34th Street and the NBC Western television series The Restless Gun. Payne was born in Roanoke, Virginia. His mother, Ida Hope , a singer, graduated from the Virginia Seminary in Roanoke and married George Washington Payne, a developer in Roanoke. They lived at Fort Lewis, an antebellum mansion that became a state historic property but was destroyed by fire in the late 1950s. Payne went to Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City in the fall of 1930. He studied drama at Columbia and voice at Juilliard School. To support himself, he took on a variety of odd jobs, including wrestling and singing in vaudeville. In 1934, a talent scout for the Shubert theaters spotted Payne and gave him a job as a stock player. Payne toured with several Shubert Brothers shows, and frequently sang on New York-based radio programs. In 1936, he landed a contract at Samuel Goldwyn, and he left New York for Hollywood.

Don Pullen was an American jazz pianist and organist. Pullen developed a strikingly individual style throughout his career. He composed masterworks... ranging from blues to bebop and modern jazz. The great variety of his body of work makes it difficult to pigeonhole his musical style. Pullen was born on December 25, 1941, and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. Growing up in a musical family, he learned the piano at an early age. He played with the choir in his local church and was heavily influenced by his cousin, Clyde "Fats" Wright, who was a professional jazz pianist. He took some lessons in classical piano and knew little of jazz. At this time, he was mainly aware of church music and the blues. Pullen left Roanoke for Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina to study for a medical career but soon he realized that his only true vocation was music. After playing with local musicians and being exposed for the first time to albums of the major jazz musicians and composers he abandoned his medical studies. He set out to make a career in music, desirous of playing like Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy.

Century Fox films from the early 1930s through the 1940s. Bari was born in Roanoke, Virginia. Most of her early films, before getting supporting parts, were uncredited roles usually playing receptionists or chorus girls. Bari's rare leading roles include China Girl , Hello, Frisco, Hello , and The Spiritualist . In her B movie roles, Lynn was usually cast as a villainess. Examples include Shock and Nocturne, both 1946. An exceptions to this was The Bridge of San Luis Rey . Lynn Bari's last film appearance was as the mother of rebellious teenager Patty McCormack in The Young Runaways . In 1955, Bari appeared in the episode "The Beautiful Miss X" of Rod Cameron's syndicated crime drama City Detective. In 1960, she played female bandit Belle Starr in the episode "Perilous Passage" of the NBC western series Overland Trail starring William Bendix and Doug McClure and with fellow guest star Robert J. Wilke as Cole Younger.
