Scranton

The Terence V. Powderly House is located along North Main Avenue in Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. It was the home of Powderly from his early... life until 1921. During this time he led the Knights of Labor and served as mayor of Scranton for several terms. It is a two-story single-family dwelling, built in a vernacular Victorian style, with a cross-gabled roof on a busy street in a residential neighborhood in an area slightly west of downtown Scranton, looking towards it over the Lackawanna River. The house has one architecturally noteworthy feature, a glass anteentrance to keep out cold weather, not common at that time. Since his death the house has gone through other owners but has not been substantially altered, other than the conversion of the second floor to an apartment and the addition of a picture window to that unit. In 1966 it was declared a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It has remained a private residence and is not open to the public.

Tripp Family Homestead, also known as "Tripp House", is a historic house at 1101 N. Main Avenue in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The... oldest portion of the house was built around 1771 by Isaac Tripp, Scranton's first settler. Isaac Tripp II began later modification around 1778 and Isaac Tripp III further renovated the home in 1812, which left the building in a Federal style. The building stayed in the Tripp family until 1900 and is the oldest building in Lackawanna County. It is open as a special events facility. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The Finch Building is located on Wyoming Avenue, just north of US 11 and PA 307, in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a stone... building designed by William Scott-Collins in the Renaissance revival style and completed in 1899. It takes its name from the Finch Manufacturing Company, a maker of finished steel products such as manhole covers that had been based in the city for much of the later 19th century. Its first occupant was the International Correspondence School, a business that offered study-by-mail classes to the many coal miners in the Northeastern Pennsylvania region. The school, founded in 1894, had quickly outgrown its offices at the nearby Coal Exchange Building and needed the space. Later it was used as offices for the Hudson Coal Company. In 1976 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today it has been remodeled into an apartment building called Finch Towers.

Scranton City Hall is located at Washington and Mulberry streets in the downtown section of that city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is a... three-story limestone ashlar Victorian Gothic Revival building with sandstone trim, designed by architects Edwin L. Walter and Frederick Lord Brown and built in 1888. The main building, on Washington Street, houses the offices of city's mayor and other executive officers — city clerk, comptroller and police chief - and those who work under their immediate supervision. A bridge from the second story connects it to the fire department headquarters, facing Mulberry Street, built at the same time by the same architects in the same style. Since the two form a larger complex, they were listed together when the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. A small banner on a lamppost in front of the main entrance is supposedly sponsored by Dunder Mifflin, the fictional paper and office supply company in NBC's sitcom The Office, which is set in Scranton. It recognizes the positive impact the show has had on the perception of the city.

Reich is currently Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. He was formerly a professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and professor of social and economic policy at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management of Brandeis University. He has also been a contributing editor of The New Republic, The American Prospect , Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Reich is a political commentator on programs including Hardball with Chris Matthews, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, CNBC's Kudlow & Company, and APM's Marketplace.

Jerome Bernard "Jerry" Orbach was an American actor and singer. He was well known for his starring role as Detective Lennie Briscoe in the Law &... Order television series and as the voice of Lumière in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. As well, Orbach was a noted musical theatre star. His prominent roles included originating the character of El Gallo in The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical play in history; Chuck Baxter in the original production of Promises, Promises ; Julian Marsh in 42nd Street; and Billy Flynn in the original production of Chicago. Orbach was born in the Bronx, the only child of Emily , a greeting card manufacturer and radio singer, and Leon Orbach, a restaurant manager and vaudeville performer. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Hamburg, Germany, who was descended from Sephardic refugees from the Spanish Inquisition. His mother, a native of Pennsylvania, was Polish American and Catholic, and Orbach was raised Catholic .

Joseph Edward Collins was an American Major League Baseball player, born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. On September 25, 1948 he began his major league... career playing for the New York Yankees. He played in 10 Major League seasons and seven World Series, all for the Yankees. At 6'0" tall and 185 pounds, he batted left and threw left, which made him unavailable to play most infield positions, where he was a first baseman in 715 games regular-season games. He also played 114 games as an outfielder. His peak number of games played in a season was 130 in 1954. Collins hit 86 regular-season home runs, but more importantly, four in the World Series with powerful Yankee teams. He was a teammate of both Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. His last Major League game was on September 29, 1957. His entire major league career was spent with the Yankees. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the start of the 1958 season, but he chose to retire rather than join the Phillies, thus cancelling the trade. He died in Union Township, Union County, New Jersey in 1989, and there is a small park there named in his honor.

William Stanley Merwin is an American poet, credited with over 30 books of poetry, translation and prose. During the 1960s anti-war movement,... Merwin's unique craft was thematically characterized by indirect, unpunctuated narration. In the 1980s and 1990s, Merwin's writing influence derived from his interest in Buddhist philosophy and deep ecology. Residing in Hawaii, he writes prolifically and is dedicated to the restoration of the islands' rainforests. Merwin has received many honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the Tanning Prize, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Academy of American Poets, as well as the Golden Wreath of the Struga Poetry Evenings. In 2010, the Library of Congress named Merwin the seventeenth United States Poet Laureate to replace the outgoing Kay Ryan. W. S. Merwin was born in New York City on September 30, 1927. He grew up on the corner of Fourth Street and New York Avenue in Union City, New Jersey until 1936, when his family moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania. As a child, he was enamored of the natural world, sometimes finding himself talking to the large tree in his back yard.

Cynthia Rothrock is an American martial artist and actress specializing in martial arts films. Rothrock is five-time World Karate Champion in forms... and weapons between 1981 and 1985. These categories are not combat-oriented, being displays of fluidity of movement rather than fighting, and are therefore not segregated into male and female categories but fully open to both sexes. She holds six Black belts in various Far Eastern martial disciplines, including Tang Soo Do , Tae Kwon Do , Eagle Claw , Wu Shu , Northern Shaolin , and Pai Lum Tao Kung Fu . She received her sixth degree black belt in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 2006 and was tested by Grand Master Robert Kovaleski, 7th Dan and chair of the I.T.M.A. She also works as a martial arts instructor and her favorite weapons are the hook swords. Northern California was her home in 1983 where she worked with the West Coast Demonstration Team. At this time Golden Harvest was searching in Los Angeles for the next Bruce Lee.

Scranton, Pennsylvania, one of six children, to Ruthenian parents who had emigrated from Uzhgorod, in what is now Ukraine. She attended Central High School and Marywood College . She later went to New York City and attended the Alvienne School of Drama. In late 1942, she was eking out a precarious living with a small Midtown Manhattan summer stock company when she got a job as understudy for Tallulah Bankhead in Thornton Wilder's play The Skin of Our Teeth. However, Scott never had an opportunity to substitute for Bankhead. When Miriam Hopkins was signed to replace Bankhead, Scott quit and returned to her drama studies and some fashion modeling. She then received a call that Gladys George, who was signed to replace Hopkins, was ill, and Scott was needed back at the theatre. She went on in the leading role of "Sabina", receiving a nod of approval from critics at the age of 20.

Walter Bobbie is an American theatre director, choreographer, and occasional actor and dancer. Bobbie has directed both musicals and plays on... Broadway and Off-Broadway, and was the Artistic Director of the New York City Center Encores! concert series. He directed the long-running revival of the musical Chicago. Bobbie was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Scranton and did graduate work at The Catholic University of America. Bobbie explains what inspired him to work in theater: "My first Broadway show was How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, maybe in 1964. I came in to New York from college in Pennsylvania for the World's FairI remember sitting there -- I practically had to be held down in my seat -- and I had never seen anything like it. That day it was clear to me that I wanted to come back to New York, and theater was what I wanted to do. It was transforming the time of life and will one day grow up to become a famous director of Chicago ." As a performer, Bobbie created the role of "Roger" in the original Broadway production of Grease in 1972.

Tom Flannery is an American singer-songwriter and playwright from Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States. Allmusic has called him "one of the most... gifted songwriters to emerge at the turn of the century." After three critically acclaimed albums he started the website Songaweek.com with friend and fellow songwriter Lorne Clarke as a venue to release all his new music digitally. In the five years between 2003 and 2008 he recorded and made available at least one brand new song per week, frequently writing about current events. The Anthracite Shuffle, a concept album dealing with the history of coal mining in Northeastern Pennsylvania, was inspired by a 1996 journey to Houston which Flannery found strikingly flat and level compared to his mountainous home. In 2005 he contributed a solo acoustic version of the song Boom Boom Mancini to a Warren Zevon tribute album called Hurry Home Early: The Songs of Warren Zevon. Splendid Magazine called the performance "bone-chilling.. marks the disc's pinnacle.
