Formerly part of the District of Columbia, the land now composing the county was retroceded to Virginia on July 9, 1846, in an act of Congress that took effect in 1847. It was called Alexandria County from that date until March 16, 1920, when an act of the General Assembly changed its name to Arlington County. Despite being organized politically as a "county" in Virginia, it is considered a Central City of the Washington Metropolitan Area by the Census Bureau, along with the adjacent cities of Washington and Alexandria, Virginia. At a land area of 26 square miles , it is geographically the smallest self-governing county in the United States. In 2005 Arlington was ranked first among walkable cities in the United States by the American Podiatric Medical Association. CNN Money ranked Arlington as the most educated city in 2006 with 35.7% of residents having held graduate degrees. Shanksville is a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States, with a population of 245, as of the 2000 census. It is part of the... Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Pittsburgh Tri-State area. Shanksville came to international attention during the September 11, 2001 attacks when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed nearby. Shanksville is located at 40°1′2″N 78°54′21″W / 40.01722°N 78.90583°W / 40.01722; -78.90583 , with the borough covering 0.2 sq mi . Shanksville has the seventh-highest elevation of towns in Pennsylvania, at 2,230 feet. The town is primarily residential, with a small service station, Beaner's Marine, Ida's Country Store, a grocery store owned by Rick King, Creekside Country Store, a locally owned gift and craft shop, and the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department. Shanksville United Methodist Church and St. Mark Lutheran Church are also located here. As of the census of 2000, there were 245 people, 96 households, and 69 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,391.9 people per square mile . There were 100 housing units at an average density of 568.
