The Democratic Party is one of the world's oldest political parties and is the party with the lengthiest record of continuous operation in the United States. It also is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. It has the most registered voters of any party in the world as of 2004, with 72 million voters. Polls taken over the last decade indicate 34-36% of American voters self-identify... as Democrats. Since the 2006 general elections, the Democratic Party has been the majority party in both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Democrats also hold a majority of state governorships and control a majority of state legislatures, as well as the Oval Office in the White House. Barack Obama, the current President of the United States, is the 15th Democrat to hold the office. The Democratic Party evolved from Anti-Federalist factions that opposed the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton in the early 1790s. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison organized these factions into the Democratic-Republican Party.

Harvard University is a private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and a member of the Ivy League. Established in 1636 by the colonial Massachusetts legislature, Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and currently comprises ten separate academic... units. It was also the first corporation in the United States. Initially called "New College" or "the college at New Towne", the institution was renamed Harvard College on March 13, 1639. It was named after John Harvard, a young clergyman from Southwark, Surrey, an alumnus of the University of Cambridge , who bequeathed the College his library of four hundred books and £779 , assuring its continued operation. The earliest known official reference to Harvard as a "university" occurs in the new Massachusetts Constitution of 1780. During his 40-year tenure as Harvard president , Charles William Eliot radically transformed Harvard into the pattern of the modern research university.
