Game Overview

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, known in Japan as Persona 4, is a console role-playing game developed and published by Atlus for Sony's PlayStation 2, and chronologically the fifth installment in the Persona series. Persona 4 was released in Japan in July 2008, North America in December 2008, and Europe in March 2009. Instead of the city locales of previous games in the series, Persona 4 takes place in a fictional Japanese countryside and is indirectly related to Persona 3. It features a weather forecast system with events happening on foggy days to replace the moon phase system (with events happening on full moons in Persona 3) implemented in the previous games. Its story is a suspenseful countryside murder mystery with multiple twists and turns in the plot. The North American package of the game was released with a CD with selected music from the game, and, unlike with Persona 3, the European package also contained a soundtrack CD.

The Good

Multiple themed dungeons to explore, Fun and engaging combat, Great cast of realistic characters, Social links directly influence combat performance, Character stats have a strong effect on actions.

The Bad

Poor camera when dungeon-crawling, Lots of reused shadow and personae artwork.

The Bottom Line

Persona 4, another in renown and award-winning Shin Megami Tensei series, is a riveting murder mystery RPG featuring an entirely new cast, loads more story, content, action, and depth. Shortly after an urban youth begins a year-long stay in the countryside town of Inaba, the rural towns peace is shattered by a horrific murder that leaves no clues or suspects. As the lone incident develops into a series of bizarre crimes, he discovers that only he and his friends have the power to solve the baffling case, bring those responsible to justice, and restore harmony to his new home.

If you've never played Persona 3, then it'll be overwhelmingly fresh entry to the RPG genre. If you've actually played Persona 3, then there have been more then enough changes to warrant a revisit through the world of Inaba.

Everything from the battle system and the dungeons that you fight through to the social links you develop and friend interaction that you do on your "off hours" has been radically improved in this game.
