The Orpheum Theatre, also known as New Orpheum Theatre and Orpheum Electric Building, is a performing arts center located at 528 S. Pierce Street in... Sioux City, Iowa. Built in 1927 as a vaudeville and movie palace, the theatre was restored in 1999 and today is the home of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra. The Sioux City Orpheum was designed by the nationally known Chicago firm of Rapp & Rapp and constructed in 1927 as part of the Orpheum Circuit. The major builder for the theatre was local Sioux City businessman, Arthur Sanford. It was one of the largest theatres in Iowa at its time and was certainly somewhat of a risk financially for Mr. Sanford, with a total construction cost of 1.75 million. This once opulent vaudeville and moving picture house boasted a large 2,650 seat, three story auditorium complete with Wurlitzer pipe organ, half circle boxes, hand carved detailing, gilded ornamentation, several crystal chandeliers and a hand painted ceiling. Throughout the years, the Orpheum was used for symphony performances, ballet and special attractions and hosted entertainers such as Fred Astaire, Tallulah Bankhead, and Katharine Hepburn.

The Sioux City Municipal Auditorium, more recently known as the Long Lines Family Recreation Center, is a 3,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Sioux... City, Iowa, USA. The fifth in a line of major indoor venues built in Sioux City, it was designed by Knute E. Westerlind in 1938 and finally completed after many delays in 1950. Originally independent, the auditorium is now a part of the Tyson Events Center along with Gateway Arena, built in 2003. For countless generations, the Native American residents at the confluence of the Big Sioux River with the Missouri River held their ceremonies, performances, and sporting events primarily outdoors, without need of specialized structures. The fourth Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1830 forced them to leave Iowa, and forty years later the new White residents built the first in a series of five major indoor venues for Sioux City: the Academy of Music of 1870, the Peavey Grand Opera House of 1888, the Old Municipal Auditorium of 1909, this one completed in 1950, and Gateway Arena of 2003. Van Doren is perhaps best remembered for bringing the rock 'n' roll-style of music alive in the B-musical Untamed Youth , and for many other films of this exotic nature. Van Doren was born Joan Lucille Olander in Rowena, South Dakota, the daughter of Warner Carl Olander and Lucille Harriet Bennett . She is of three-quarters Swedish ancestry; the remainder is mixed English and German. Her mother named her after Joan Crawford. In 1939, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa. In May 1942, they moved to Los Angeles. In early 1946, Van Doren began working as an usher at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The following year, she had a bit part on an early television show. She also sang with Ted Fio Rito's band and entered beauty contests. Van Doren was married for a brief time at seventeen. She and first husband, Jack Newman, eloped to Santa Barbara.

Brian Wansink is an American professor in the fields of consumer behavior and nutritional science. He is a former Executive Director of the USDA's... Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion . Wansink is best known for his work on consumer behavior and food and for popularizing terms such as "mindless eating" and "health halos." His research has focused on how our immediate environment influences eating habits and preferences. Wansink holds the John S. Dyson Endowed Chair in the Applied Economics and Management Department at Cornell University. He is the author of over 100 academic articles and books, including the best-selling book Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think and Marketing Nutrition . He is a 2007 recipient of the humorous Ig Nobel Prize and was named ABC World News Person of the Week on January 4, 2008. Having been referred to as the "Sherlock Holmes of Food" and the "Wizard of Why", Wansink and his Food and Brand Lab have been credited with improving the deeper scientific understanding of food eating and food shopping.

Fredrick Lawrence "Fred" Grandy is a former actor best known for his role as 'Gopher' on the sitcom The Love Boat and who later became a member of... the United States House of Representatives from the state of Iowa. Grandy was most recently the host of "The Grandy Group," a morning drive time radio talk show on 630 WMAL in Washington, D.C.. Grandy was born in Sioux City, Iowa. He received his bachelor's degree in English studies from Harvard University in 1970 and is conversant in both French and Arabic. Grandy played a recurring character on the 1970s sitcom, Maude, playing the boyfriend of Maude's daughter, Carol. He played the ship's purser, Burl "Gopher" Smith, for nine seasons on the American television series The Love Boat. In 1982, while visiting Turkey to film scenes for the show, Grandy suffered severe burns when a balloon filled with hydrogen exploded. Grandy appeared in the 1973 made for TV movie, The Girl Most Likely to, as Ted Gates. He also appeared in a number of Match Game episodes in the mid-1970s.

Gerald Patrick "Jerry" Mathers is an American television, film, and stage actor. Mathers is best known for his role in the television sitcom series... Leave It to Beaver , in which he played Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver, the younger son of archetypal suburban couple June and Ward Cleaver , and the brother of Wally Cleaver . Mathers was born in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of a high school principal. His acting career began early. In a commercial for PET Milk, at age 2, he walked into a barroom wearing diapers, six guns, cowboy boots and a big cowboy hat. Vaudeville comedian Ed Wynn was behind the bar and several cowboy actors began portraying a bar fight. At this point, Mathers walks through the fighting cowboys and one of them picks him up and they all say, "Why are you here?" Mathers responds, "I’m the toughest hombre in these parts. You better have my brand," while he pounds on the bar. His early movies included This is My Love , Men of the Fighting Lady , The Seven Little Foys and The Trouble with Harry .

Edward Macdonald Carey was an American actor, best known for his role as the patriarch Dr. Tom Horton on NBC's soap opera Days of our Lives. For... almost three decades, he was the show's central cast member. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, Carey graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City with a bachelor's degree in 1935, after attending the University of Wisconsin–Madison for a year where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He first made his career starring in various B-movies of the 1940s, '50s and '60s. He was known in many Hollywood circles as "King of the Bs", sharing the throne with his "queen", Lucille Ball. A successful radio actor and stage performer whose credits included the hit Broadway show Lady in the Dark and the 1942 film Wake Island. Carey also appeared in Take a Letter, Darling and Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt , filmed in Santa Rosa, California. In 1943, he joined the Marines, and stayed on active duty until 1947. In 1947, Carey returned to Paramount in Suddenly, It's Spring.

Constance Moore was a singer and actress. Her most noted work was in wartime musicals such as Show Business and Atlantic City and the classic 1939... movie serial Buck Rogers, in which she played Wilma Deering, the only female character in the serial. Moore was born in Sioux City, Iowa, but her family moved away when she was aged six months and she spent most of her formative years in Dallas, Texas. All she wanted was to sing, and in the 30's she got a job with CBS radio. While working on one of their musical series she impressed a scout from Universal Studios and signed a contract with them. Among her costars was W. C. Fields in You Can't Cheat an Honest Man . She appeared on Broadway in the musical By Jupiter. She retired from films in 1947 but made sporadic appearances over the next few decades. She appeared on a USO tour with Bob Hope and the Nicholas Brothers in 1951. She painted still lifes and in 1976 was the chairperson for the Braille Institute Auxiliary in Beverly Hills, California. Moore married her agent, John Maschio, when she was eighteen.

Michael Eugene Reilly is a former Major League Baseball umpire who worked in the American League from 1977 to 1999 and throughout both major leagues... from 2000-2010. Reilly was raised and still resides in Battle Creek, Michigan, the breakfast cereal capital of the world . Upon Ed Montague's retirement in February 2010, Reilly became Major League Baseball's senior umpire; his 4,362 career games ranked ninth in major league history entering the 2010 season. He was the third base umpire for David Wells' perfect game on May 17, 1998.
