Springfield Technical Community College was built on the site of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The armory, established by George Washington was an important supplier of US armaments for over a century and a half before closing in 1968 It was originally known as the Springfield Technical Institute and was located a few blocks to the west. Enrollment exceeded all expectations. The college moved in to occupy the majority of the Armory shortly after the armory closed. That same year the school was renamed to its current name. While 20 acres of the 55-acre site remained in the... hands of the National Park Service for historic preservation, 35 acres went to the college. Century old buildings were reused as classrooms while newer state-of-the-art facilities were built elsewhere. Springfield Technical Community College remains one of the most diverse campuses in the state college system of Massachusetts. Offering the associate degree in over 30 programs and dozens of certificate/completion programs, the college is highly respected in the region.
