Game Overview

Tactical Assault is a real-time spaceship combat game for 1 or 2 players, featuring a wide array of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry from the universe of the original Star Trek series. Players take command of powerful Federation and Klingon warships and must outthink and out duel their opponents in order to succeed. Play through either the Federation or Klingon campaigns in single-player mode, or go head-to-head against a friend in wireless multiplayer action. Gameplay in Star Trek: Tactical Assault is about tactics, effective movement, and the use of your ship’s weapons and shields. Success in battle depends on balancing your precious energy resources efficiently between these three competing needs.

The Good

Original strategic concept forces you to consider ship movement, multiple shield facings, and weapon location, skirmish and ad hoc battles extend the game's shelf life, William Shatner.

The Bad

One-note gameplay boils down to the same basic maneuvers every time, surprise asteroid collisions are frustrating and unnecessary, boring story without any recognizable or interesting characters, Star Trek license is woefully underused.

The Bottom Line

A unique Star Trek game for handheld systems by the creators of Starfleet Command, Star Trek: Tactical Assault takes place entirely in the original Star Trek universe and gives players total control over authentic Star Trek ships and weaponry in tense battle encounters. Both the Federation and Klingon campaign modes feature real-time combat with branching missions and multiple outcomes. Wireless multiplayer mode allows you to test your skills and tactical maneuvers against those of your friends. Successful gameplay relies on strategic movement and effective use of a ship's weapons and shields.

It offers a decent mix of strategy and action, though both halves never gel very well. The option to pilot several vessels in two different campaigns is definitely nice, but the story and missions could have used more variety.
