Bakersfield is a city near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County, California. It is roughly equidistant between Fresno and Los Angeles, 110 mi to the north and south respectively. The city's population was 347,483 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th largest city in... California and the 51st largest city in the United States. The Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 800,458 making it the 63rd largest metropolitan area in the country. It is California's third largest inland city, after Fresno and Sacramento. The city's economy relies on agriculture, petroleum extraction and refining, and manufacturing. Bakersfield has been briefly known as Baker's Field, Kern Island, and Alkalai City. Archaeological evidence indicates the presence of Native American settlements dating thousand of years. The Yokuts lived in lodges along the branches of the Kern River Delta and hunted antelope, tule elk, deer, bear, fish, and game birds. In 1776, the Spanish missionary Father Francisco Garcés became the first European to explore the area.

Rose Hills Memorial Park is the largest cemetery in the United States and is located in Whittier, California. It is owned and operated by Service Corporation International . In 1917, a small indoor mausoleum named "The Whittier Heights Mausoleum" after a short time as "Mausoleum 1", the second... indoor mausoleum in California , was opened on the grounds of the then Whittier Heights Cemetery. In 1929, construction began on the first phase of the El Portal de la Paz mausoleum. Four garden mausoleums and four chapels were also built. In 1942, Rose Hills completed the installation of its crematorium, and in 1956 Rose Hills Mortuary and Flower Shop were opened, making Rose Hills one of the first cemeteries in the country to offer all the necessary services and facilities for memorialization. Also in 1956, Hillside Chapel and Sky Church were completed. Sky Church was destroyed by the Whittier earthquake of 1987.

Lebec is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in Kern County, California. It is one of the Mountain Communities of the Tejon Pass, and the home of the Tejon Ranch Company. Lebec is 40 miles south of Bakersfield. The population was 1,468 in the 2010 census, up from 1,224 in 2000. .... According to the United States Census Bureau, Lebec has an area of 15.3 square miles . The community, which is in the Tejon Pass, lies at an elevation of 3,481 feet . Interstate 5 is the only highway. Local traffic drives on Lebec Road, Peace Valley Road, Frazier Mountain Park Road and adjoining streets. The first post office opened in 1895, having been transferred from Tejon. Lebec is named in honor of Peter Lebeck or Lebecque, who was killed by a bear nearby in 1837, and is memorialized in an epitaph at Old Fort Tejon, found carved on an old oak tree. The carving has since been covered by bark. The 2010 United States Census reported that 1,468 people, 533 households, and 372 families resided in the CDP. The population density was 95.8 people per square mile . There were 594 housing units at an average density of 38.8 per square mile .
