The State University of New York at Stony Brook, known as Stony Brook University, is a public research university located in Stony Brook, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island, about 50 miles east of Manhattan. Founded in 1957 and located at its present site since 1962, Stony Brook University is one of the four university centers and is considered a flagship institution of the State University of New York.
