Powers was born Stefanie Paul, in Hollywood, California. Her Polish-American parents divorced during her childhood. Powers was estranged from her father, who she barely referenced and whose name is never mentioned in her memoir, One from the Hart, in which she referred to the "tension and unhappiness created by my father's presence". She remained extremely close throughout her life with her mother, Julianna Dimitria "Julie" . She has a brother and... a half-sister. Powers was a cheerleader at Hollywood High School; one of her classmates was Nancy Sinatra. In 1965, using the alias Taffy Paul, she made an obscure independent film, The Young Sinner, with future Billy Jack star Tom Laughlin.
