Steve Gadd Filmography

The Manhattan Jazz Quintet is a jazz ensemble consisting of David Matthews on piano, Lew Soloff on trumpet, Victor Lewis on drums, Andy Snitzer on... saxophone, and Charnett Moffett on bass. Previously, the band featured George Young on tenor sax, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums. The group was formed in 1983 at the suggestion of Japanese jazz magazine Swing Journal and the King record label and became quite a success in Japan, earning the Gold Disk Award of Swing in 1984. Gadd left after 1987, with Dave Weckl serving as a replacement in 1988 and '89, but came back for a reunion in 1990, which also featured John Scofield as guest artist on a number of selections. These later recordings were recorded for the Sweet Basil label. The group got back together to make two recordings in 1995 and has released a record every year since 2000 under the Video Arts Music label. Video Arts also re-released many of the older albums on November 21, 2001, coinciding with the release of the new I Got Rhythm. Gadd has since left the band, with Victor Lewis becoming his permanent replacement in 1993, as has Young, who has been replaced by Andy Snitzer since 2000.

Stuff was a New York-based jazz funk band active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The members were Gordon Edwards , Richard Tee , Eric Gale ,... Cornell Dupree , Chris Parker , and later Steve Gadd . Initially called The Encyclopedia of Soul, in his liner notes for the 2008 Eagle Rock release Stuff - Live in Montreux 1976 Edwards describes how the band was founded: I was contracting and playing studio sessions, and hired Cornell for many of the dates – so we started recruiting for the band. One day at Rudy Van Gelder’s – I remember it was a hell of a job; it was for Esther Marrow, Queen Esther, great singer. George Benson was on the job, Bernard Purdie, and Richard Tee on keyboards. Esther asked me if she could use the band for a club date she had lined up – a club called Mikell’s, in New York City. We did play there, and Richard Tee stopped by one time and he started coming every night. We only worked Monday through Thursday, and Mikell’s was packed, wall to wall, round the block.

Steely Dan is an American rock band consisting of core members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The band's popularity peaked in the late 1970s, with... the release of seven albums blending elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies." The band's music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies played by Becker and Fagen along with a revolving cast of rock and pop studio musicians. Steely Dan's "cerebral, wry and eccentric" lyrics, often filled with sharp sarcasm, touch upon such themes as drugs, love affairs, and crime. The pair is well-known for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio, with one notable example being that Becker and Fagen used at least 42 different studio musicians, 11 engineers, and took over a year to record the tracks that resulted in 1980's Gaucho — an album that contains only seven songs. Steely Dan toured from 1972 to 1974, but in 1975 became a purely studio-based act. The late 1970s saw the group release a series of moderately successful singles and albums.
