Tales of the Black Freighter is a direct to DVD animated film, directed by Mike Smith and Daniel Delpurgatorio, which serves as an addition to the 2009 motion picture Watchmen based on a story within a story from the comic Watchmen. It was released on DVD in the USA on March 24, 2009. It has been given an R rating by the MPAA for violent and grisly images. The DVD also includes Under the Hood, an adaptation of the Hollis Mason book featured at the end of the first three chapters of the novel. It is presented as a 35-minute episode of the fictional TV newsmagazine The Culpeper Minute,... featuring interviews set in 1975 with various characters revealing more of the backstory of the Minutemen, precursors of The Watchmen. This feature is rated PG. The plot of Tales of the Black Freighter concerns a shipwrecked mariner who tries to return home to warn that an evil ship is going to attack the town. Tales of the Black Freighter was originally a comic which existed as a story within a story in the Watchmen graphic novel. In October 2001, David Hayter was hired to write a screenplay for a possible movie adaptation of the series.
