The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, locally known as the "Gorge Bridge" and the "High Bridge," is a cantilever truss bridge across the Rio Grande Gorge 10 miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico, United States. Royal Gorge Bridge over the Arkansas river in Colorado, the New River Gorge Bridge over the New River in West Virginia, the Foresthill Bridge over the American River in California, and the Glen Canyon Dam Bridge over the Colorado River in Arizona. The span is 1,280 feet : two 300-foot -long approach spans with a 600-foot -long main center span. The bridge was dedicated on September 10, 1965 and is a part of U.S. Route 64, a major east-west road. In 1966 the American Institute of Steel Construction awarded the bridge "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge" in the "Long Span" category. The bridge has appeared in several films, including Natural Born Killers, Twins, She's Having a Baby, Wild Hogs and Terminator Salvation. The bridge has been the site of numerous suicides. Authorities are studying ways to prevent suicides there.

Kirtland Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in the southeast quadrant of the Albuquerque, New Mexico urban area, adjacent to the Albuquerque International Sunport. Taos is a town in Taos County in the north-central region of New Mexico, incorporated in 1934. As of the 2000 census, its population was 4,700. Other nearby communities include Ranchos de Taos, Cañon, Taos Canyon, Ranchitos, and El Prado. The town is close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American... village and tribe from which it takes its name. Taos is also the county seat of Taos County. The name is also referred to by the nearby ski resort of Taos Ski Valley. The English name Taos derives from the native Taos language meaning "place of red willows". The Taos Pueblo, that borders the town of Taos on its north side, has been occupied for nearly a millennium. It is estimated that the pueblo was built between 1000 and 1450 A.D., with some later expansion, and the pueblo is considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. Located in a tributary valley off the Rio Grande, it is the most northern of the New Mexico pueblos. The Pueblo, at some places five stories high, is a combination of many individual homes with common walls. There are over 1,900 people in the Taos pueblo community.
