Universal Records was a record label owned by Universal Music Group and operated as part of the Universal Motown Republic Group. Founded in 1995 as Rising Tide Records, the label would ultimately begin to thrive the following year when its name was changed to Universal Records to complement the... branding overhaul of the Universal Studios structure since MCA Inc. was purchased from Matsushita Electric by The Seagram Company Ltd.. The label, which is actually the second incarnation was created by current Universal Music Group chairman Doug Morris and Daniel Glass, who became its president. Universal Records had success in breaking new artists, including the multi-platinum debut of Erykah Badu, Billie Myers, Goldfinger, Akon and the Lost Boyz. Recognizing the changing landscape of the industry, Glass strategically aligned Universal Records with such independent record labels as Kedar Entertainment, home to Erykah Badu, and Mojo Records, home to platinum artist Reel Big Fish and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

Third Man Records is an independent record label founded by Jack White in Detroit, Michigan, in 2001. Third Man established its first physical location — a combination record store, performance venue, and headquarters for the label — in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2009. Jack White founded... The Nashville location serves as a record store and a complete production office. It includes a recording studio, rehearsal stage, photo studio, darkroom, and storage facility for master recording tapes. To commemorate the event, White debuted his new project, The Dead Weather, performing a short set for the 150 invited guests. The label's name features the number three due to White's known fondness of it, as mentioned in several interviews. It refers to Carol Reed's The Third Man starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles. His old upholstering company was named Third Man Upholstery. White also refers to himself as a woman's "third man" in the song "Ball and Biscuit" on The White Stripes' album Elephant.

Sympathy for the Record Industry is a mainly independent garage rock and punk label formed in 1988 by record industry anti-mogul Long Gone John. The first Sympathy release was the Lazy Cowgirls' album "Radio Cowgirl" LP, which Long Gone John said he released as a "favor to the band." Sympathy has... a catalog of more than 750 releases, and is based out of Olympia, Washington. The label's name references The Rolling Stones' song "Sympathy for the Devil". Notable artists who started on Sympathy and went on to gain mainstream success include The White Stripes, Hole, and The Electrocutes . Long Gone John is the owner, CEO, and seemingly the only employee of Sympathy. He is an avid record collector, with more than 10,000 records in his collection. He also owns Necessaries Toy Foundation, a company that creates 18-24 inch figures. Long Gone John also operates Sympathetic Press, a book publishing company that prints books with rock 'n' roll themes. Other Sympathy acts worthy of notice have been Jack Off Jill, Scarling.
