Thomas Jefferson  – July 4, 1826 was an American Founding Father who was the principal author of the United States Declaration of Independence and the third President of the United States . At the beginning of the American Revolution, Jefferson served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia. He then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia , barely escaping capture by the British in 1781.
