MGM Records was a record label started by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio in 1946, for the purpose of releasing soundtrack albums of their musical films. Later it became a pop label, lasting into the 1970s. The company also released soundtrack albums of the music for some of their non-musical... films as well, and on rare occasions, cast albums of off-Broadway musicals such as The Fantasticks and the 1954 revival of The Threepenny Opera. In one instance, it even released the highly successful soundtrack album of a film made by a rival studio, Columbia Pictures's Born Free . Their first soundtrack was of Till the Clouds Roll By, a 1946 film based on the life of composer Jerome Kern. It was the first soundtrack album of a live-action film. The album was originally issued as a set of four 10-inch 78-rpm records. As in many early MGM soundtrack albums, only eight selections from the film are included. In order to fit the songs onto the record sides the musical material needed editing and manipulation.

Dunhill Records was started by Lou Adler, Al Bennett, Pierre Cossette and Bobby Roberts in 1964 as Dunhill Productions, originally for the purpose of releasing Johnny Rivers recordings on Imperial Records. It became a record label in 1965 and was distributed by ABC Records. The first Dunhill single... released was "My Prayer/Pretty Please" by Shelley Fabares, who was Adler's wife at the time. Adler sold his shares to ABC Records in the summer of 1967, this created ABC Dunhill Records. Afterwards Adler launched Ode Records. ABC continued to release records on the Dunhill label until 1975, after which all remaining artists were absorbed into the ABC Records roster before MCA Records bought ABC Records in 1979. An offshoot of the ABC/Dunhill days was the label Buluu Dunhill Records using . The Dunhill catalogue is today managed by Geffen Records. A later independent reissue label called Dunhill Compact Classics was formed in 1986 to reissue recordings on the new compact disc format. British American Tobacco, a UK tobacco company, sued the company because of the use of the Dunhill name, forcing the company to rename itself DCC Compact Classics.
