Alcorn State University is a historically black university comprehensive land-grant institution in Lorman, Mississippi. It was founded in 1871 by the Reconstruction era legislature to provide higher education for freedmen. It was the first black land grant college in the United States. The... university is counted as a census-designated place and had a resident population of 1,017 at the 2010 census. Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist, graduated in 1948 from here. Students at the college were part of the mid-twentieth century civil rights struggle, working to register residents for voting and struggling to end segregation. Other alumni have been activists, politicians and professionals in Mississippi and other states. The University is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Alcorn State University was founded on the site originally occupied by Oakland College, a school for whites established by the Presbyterian Church. Oakland College closed its doors at the beginning of the American Civil War so that its students could fight for the Confederate States of America.

Northeast Mississippi Community College, also known as NEMCC, is a public, comprehensive community college. NEMCC is a located in Booneville, Mississippi, USA. It is one of fifteen community/junior colleges serving the state of Mississippi. The college was founded in 1948 as Northeast Mississippi... Junior College, and became known primarily as an agricultural school and junior college. The land that the college sits on was sold to the state by Dr. W. H. Sutherland, with the express desire that a college be built in Booneville. The agricultural high school status was dropped a year later. The name of the school changed again to its current form in 1987. It has extension centers located in New Albany and Corinth. Northeast Mississippi Community College's service area is made up of five counties: Alcorn, Prentiss, Tippah, Tishomingo, and Union. Northeast Mississippi Community is governed locally by a Board of Trustees which is made up of fifteen members–six members from Prentiss and two each from Alcorn, Tippah, Tishomingo, and Union counties with one member elected at-large by the Board itself. The member-at-large position is rotated among those four counties.
