The Tulane University School of Liberal Arts is a part of Tulane University and was created in the fall of 2005, pursuant to a university-wide... Renewal Plan which in part separated the School of Liberal Arts from the School of Science and Engineering. The School of Liberal Arts is made up of 15 departments and 21 interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, the social sciences and the fine arts. The academic departments include Anthropology, Art , Classical Studies, Communication, Economics, English, French and Italian, German and Slavic Studies, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, Spanish and Portuguese, Theatre and Dance. SLA is currently housed in Newcomb Hall, the Woldenberg Art Center, Dixon Hall and McWilliams Hall on the Newcomb Quad. SLA Departments and programs are also located in Dinwiddie, Tilton, Hebert, Jones and Norman Mayer Halls.

The Tulane University School of Medicine is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA and is a part of Tulane University. The school is located in the... Medical District of the New Orleans Central Business District. The school was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana and is the 15th oldest medical school in the United States and the 2nd oldest in the deep south. The first classes were held in 1835 at a variety of locations, including Charity Hospital and the Strangers Unitarian Church. In October 1832, Dr. Warren Stone, a young physician who received his medical degree from the Medical School of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was one of 108 passengers aboard an ill-fated brig, the Amelia, which set sail from New York to New Orleans carrying valuable cargo. On the fourth day out, a terrific storm occurred; the passengers were put below and the hatches were battened down. When the storm lifted, it was discovered that twenty-five passengers were in advanced stages of cholera. On October 30, the Amelia attempted unsuccessfully to make the Charleston harbor. Leaking badly, she was beached on Folly Island and had to be burned. Her passengers were made as comfortable as possible.

The mission of the Tulane University School of Social Work is to educate future social workers to: Tulane University began offering classes in social welfare in 1914. Sponsored by grants from the American Red Cross, a formal one-year program was implemented in 1921. By 1927, with funding from a Rockefeller grant, the school became a separate program with a two-year curriculum qualifying students for the Master of Arts. In 1935, the University established the degree of Master of Social Work. The School has awarded the Master of Social Work degree to more than 4,700 students from all 50 of the United States and over 30 other countries.

Ira B. Harkey Jr. was an author of books, professor of journalism, and editor and publisher of the Pascagoula, Mississippi Chronicle-Star from 1951... to 1963. Harkey was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing in 1963 for his anti-segregation editorials during the civil rights crisis surrounding the admission of James Meredith, a black man, to the University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi in 1962. Ira Harkey was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, son of a wealthy businessman. He graduated from Tulane University, where he was a brother with the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity , with an undergraduate degree in journalism in 1941 and then served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock in the Pacific theater during World War II. After the war Harkey worked as a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper. Harkey purchased the Chronicle-Star in 1949. Lawrence Wright is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, screenwriter, staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, and fellow at the Center for... Law and Security at the New York University School of Law. Wright is best known as the author of the 2006 nonfiction book, The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. Wright graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1965 and, in 2009, was inducted into Woodrow's Hall of Fame. He is a graduate of Tulane University, and taught at the American University in Cairo in Egypt for two years. Wright is the author of six books, but is best known for his 2006 book, The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. A quick bestseller, The Looming Tower was awarded the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, and is frequently referenced by media pundits as an excellent source of background information on Al Qaeda and the September 11 attacks. The book's title is a phrase from the Quran: "Wherever you are, death will find you, even in the looming tower," which Osama bin Laden quoted three times in a videotaped speech seen as directed to the 9/11 hijackers.

DeBakey was the chancellor emeritus of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and director of The Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and senior attending surgeon of The Methodist Hospital in Houston. Michael Elias DeBakey was born as Michel Dabaghi in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Lebanese immigrants Shaker and Raheeja Dabaghi . DeBakey received his BS degree from Tulane University in New Orleans. In 1932, he received an M.D. degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He remained in New Orleans to complete his internship and residency in surgery at Charity Hospital. DeBakey completed his surgical fellowships at the University of Strasbourg, France, under Professor René Leriche, and at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, under Professor Martin Kirschner. Returning to Tulane Medical School, he served on the surgical faculty from 1937 to 1948.
