Richard Hofstadter was an American public intellectual of the 1950s, a historian and DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History at Columbia... University. In the course of his career, Hofstadter became the "iconic historian of postwar liberal consensus" whom 21st-century scholars continue to consult because his intellectually engaging books and essays remain pertinent to illuminating contemporary history. His most important works are Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1860–1915 ; The American Political Tradition ; The Age of Reform ; Anti-intellectualism in American Life , and the essays collected in The Paranoid Style in American Politics . He was twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize: in 1956 for The Age of Reform, an unsentimental analysis of the populism movement in the 1890s and the progressive movement of the early 20th century; and in 1964 for the cultural history Anti-intellectualism in American Life. Richard Hofstadter was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1916 to a German American Lutheran mother and a Polish Jewish father, who died when Richard was ten.

Sir John Carew Eccles, AC FRS FRACP FRSNZ FAAS was an Australian neurophysiologist who won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his... work on the synapse. He shared the prize with Andrew Huxley and Alan Lloyd Hodgkin. Eccles was born in Melbourne, Australia. He grew up there with his two sisters and his parents: William and Mary Carew Eccles . He initially attended Warrnambool High School , then completed his final year of schooling at Melbourne High School. Aged 17, he was awarded a senior scholarship to study medicine at the University of Melbourne. As a medical undergraduate, he was never able to find a satisfactory explanation for the interaction of mind and body; he started to think about becoming a neuroscientist. He graduated in 1925, and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study under Charles Scott Sherrington at Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1929.

Carl Dennis , an American poet and educator. His book Practical Gods won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on... September 17, 1939, Dennis attended Oberlin College and the University of Chicago before receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1961. In 1966, Dennis received his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley. That same year he became an assistant professor of English at University at Buffalo, where he has spent most of his career; in 2002, he became an artist-in-residence there. Dennis has also served on the faculty of the graduate program at Warren Wilson College. Dennis has received several prizes for his poetry in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, including a Fellowship at the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy, a Guggenheim Fellowship , a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry , and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize . Dennis is the brother of American composer Robert Dennis.

Herbert Aaron Hauptman was an American mathematician and Nobel laureate. He pioneered and developed a mathematical method that has changed the whole... field of chemistry and opened a new era in research in determination of molecular structures of crystallized materials. Today, Hauptman's direct methods, which he has continued to improve and refine, are routinely used to solve complicated structures. It was the application of this mathematical method to a wide variety of chemical structures that led the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to name Hauptman and Jerome Karle recipients of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was born in New York City, the oldest child of Israel Hauptman and Leah Rosenfeld. He was married to Edith Citrynell since November 10, 1940, with two daughters, Barbara and Carol . He was interested in science and mathematics from an early age which he pursued at Townsend Harris High School, graduated from the City College of New York and obtained an M.A. degree in mathematics from Columbia University in 1939.
