The UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies is a school of University College London . It is the largest centre for the study and research... of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, and Russia in the United Kingdom. The School teaches a wide range of subjects including the history, politics, literature, sociology, economics and languages of the region. The School was inaugurated in London in 1915 by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, who later became President of Czechoslovakia. In 1999 the School merged with UCL. More than 60 academic staff work at the School, teaching and conducting research in the history, economics, politics, sociology, anthropology, culture, literature and languages of the countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, and Russia. In 2005/2006 the School had 150 graduate students studying taught MA degrees or undertaking PhD research. In addition the School has over 500 undergraduate students. Along with its undergraduate and graduate teaching, the School enjoys an enviable reputation for the quality of its interdisciplinary research.

UCL Ventures merged with the technology-transfer company of the Royal Free Hospital, Freemedic plc to form UCL Biomedica PLC. The Slade School of Fine Art is a world-renownedart school in London, United Kingdom, and a department of University College London. Sir Roger Penrose OM FRS is an English mathematical physicist and Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute,... University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College. He has received a number of prizes and awards, including the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their contribution to our understanding of the universe. He is renowned for his work in mathematical physics, in particular his contributions to general relativity and cosmology. He is also a recreational mathematician and philosopher. He was born in Colchester, Essex, England, Roger Penrose is a son of Lionel S. Penrose and Margaret Leathes. Penrose is the brother of mathematician Oliver Penrose and of chess Grandmaster Jonathan Penrose. Penrose attended University College School and University College, London, where he graduated with a first class degree in mathematics. In 1955, while still a student, Penrose reintroduced the E. H. Moore generalized matrix inverse . Penrose earned his Ph.D.

Jonathan Mark "Jonny" Buckland is an English guitarist and musician, best known as the lead guitarist of the band Coldplay. Buckland was born in... Islington, London, and lived there until the age of four, when his family moved to Pantymwyn, North Wales. He started playing the guitar at the age of eleven, after being spurred on by The Stone Roses, Ride, George Harrison and My Bloody Valentine, while being encouraged by his older brother Tim. He was a student at Ysgol y Waun and Alun School, the latter located in the Welsh town of Mold; moving on to study astronomy and mathematics at University College London, where he also met his future band mates—Chris Martin, Guy Berryman and Will Champion—and formed Coldplay. While at University College London, Buckland, along with Martin, worked as a school janitor. Buckland is noted for his sparse arrangements and use of slide. His stylistic chiming and ringing sound have led to some comparisons with the playing of U2's The Edge. Buckland has guested on Ian McCulloch's solo album Slideling and made a cameo appearance with band mate Chris Martin in the film Shaun of the Dead.

William "Will" Champion is an English musician and the drummer of rock band Coldplay. William Champion was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England,... and was brought up in Highfield, Southampton, where his father, Timothy Champion, was a professor of archaeology. As a youth, his musical influences included Tom Waits, Nick Cave and traditional Irish folk music. He grew up playing guitar, but also had experience on the piano, bass, and tin whistle. Before Will joined Coldplay, he performed in a band called Fat Hamster. He went to primary school at Portswood Primary School, his secondary school was Cantell Maths and Computing College and he went to college at Peter Symonds College. He went to church at Highfield church, Highfield, Southampton. Champion was the last of the four band members to join the ensemble on 31 July 1997 . He took up the position as drummer with no prior experience, but quickly adjusted to fill the role. In 1999, lead singer Chris Martin sacked Champion, but the band asked him to return soon after. In Coldplay, he is often regarded as the rationality of the group.

Alexander Comfort, MB BChir, PhD, DSc was a British medical professional, gerontologist, anarchist, pacifist, conscientious objector and writer,... best known for The Joy of Sex, which played a part in what is often called the sexual revolution. He was also the author of many other books on a variety of topics. Comfort was educated at Highgate School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and the London Hospital , qualifying in 1944 with both the Conjoint diplomas of LRCP London, MRCS England and the Cambridge MB BChir degrees. As a youth, Comfort lost four fingers on his left hand in an explosives accident. Comfort served as a House Physician at the London Hospital and went on to become a lecturer in physiology at the London Hospital Medical College. In 1945 he obtained the Conjoint Board's Diploma in Child Health, and progressed to a PhD in 1950 and a DSc of University College, London in 1963.

A. V. Hill, christened Archibald Vivian CH OBE FRS was an English physiologist, one of the founders of the diverse disciplines of biophysics and... operations research. He shared the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his elucidation of the production of heat and mechanical work in muscles. Born in Bristol, he was educated at Blundell's School and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge as third wrangler in the mathematics tripos before turning to physiology. His early work involved the characterization of what came to be known as Michaelis-Menten kinetics and the use of the Hill coefficient. Hill's first paper, published in 1909 while working under the supervision of John Newport Langley, is a landmark in the history of receptor theory. Hill made many exacting measurements of the physics of nerves and muscles. His earliest experiments on the heat production of contracting muscles used equipment obtained from the Swedish physiologist Magnus Blix. Both before and after World War I he worked on a range of topics in physiology in cooperation with colleagues in Cambridge, Germany and elsewhere.

Sir Bernard Katz, FRS was a German-born biophysicist, noted for his work on nerve biochemistry. He shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine... in 1970 with Julius Axelrod and Ulf von Euler. He was knighted in 1970. Born in Leipzig to a Jewish family, Germany, he was educated at the Albert Gymnasium in that city from 1921 to 1929 and went on to study medicine at the University of Leipzig. He graduated in 1934 and fled to Britain in February 1935, the rise of Hitler having made his Russian Jewish heritage dangerous. He went to work at University College London, initially under the tutelage of Archibald Vivian Hill. He finished his PhD in 1938 and won a Carnegie Fellowship to study with John Carew Eccles at Sydney Hospital. He was naturalised in 1941 and joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. He spent the war in the Pacific as a radar officer. He married Marguerite Penly in 1945 and returned to UCL as an assistant director in 1946. Back in England he also worked with the 1963 Nobel prize winners Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley. Katz was made a professor at UCL in 1952 and head of biophysics, he was also elected to the Royal Society.
